Two Paths: P/NP!

I am a UC Berkeley Freshman trying to major in Economics (it is capped major so I must maintain a high gpa), here are my classes for spring semester:

Economics 1 (core)
Math 54, linear algebra (for my math minor)
Physics c10 (a breadth requirement)
Chinese (for my own interest)

I have a choice to take some classes as Pass/no pass, which allows me to pass a class without having it affect my GPA. To take the load off, i plan to take 1 class PNP. So my question is, should I take CHinese or Physics as PNP? Physics is quite harder, but it is also a breadth requirement while Chinese is just for fun. How will it affect me if i choose physics as PNP?

You have something like 10 weeks to change a class to p/np, so you can decide then depending on whatever class you’re doing worse in.

Leftist, where did you hear about Chinese p/np jeopardizing future Chinese courses? Do you mean the language courses?

So what you mean is that if the Chinese department got a budget cut and had to reduce the number of Chinese language classes, they would filter out certain people, possibly including those that had taken it P/NP?

Jetkid03, to get into the Economics major you need to maintain a high GPA in your prerequisite courses. According to your provided schedule, the only prerequisite class you’ve listed is Economics 1. I really wouldn’t take any courses P/NP, and I really wouldn’t worry about getting into the Economics major either. I’ve had friends with 3.1 prerequisite GPAs get into the major.
