Tyler School of Art

Does anyone know anything about the new art school? Is it free standing from Temple or do you attend Tyler for art classes and Temple for liberal arts? How do you move from one school to another? I'd also like to know abou the painting, printmaking, and bookmaking.

Well, I'm not sure what you exactly mean by "new art school" as Tyler has long been known as a strong art school that is part of Temple. If you're refering to their move to a new location and new facilities, then all it means is that Temple is bringing Tyler to their main campus. So, they are moving off of the Elkins Park campus, and into a new space that will actually unite Temple's main campus and Tyler even more. Despite its reputation as an "art school" by itself, Tyler is a part of Temple University, so it can basically be summed up as "all Tyler students are Temple students, but not all Temple students are Tyler students". You will still have core requirements and classes that you will need to take on Temple's main campus, but since the two schools will even be closer than before, this should not be a problem. This also makes it convenient if you're a student like me who wants to double major, because there is the strength of an art school like Tyler joined with a large university. It is my understanding that the move will officially take place in January 2009, so Tyler students will begin living in main campus housing in the Fall of 2008. There will be a shuttle available between the two campuses for Tyler students for the first semester of that year.

Hopefully this gives you a little bit more information. Sadly I can't comment on painting, printmaking, or bookmaking, as those are not my areas of expertise, but I can tell you that Tyler seems to be very well respected as an art school in all media, so I'd say if you like the school, it's a good bet.

I'll be going there beginning next fall.
