Type 1 Diabetic

Yale is my top choice of school and I'll be applying Early Action, and though I'm a strong student I fall right in line with the thousands of other applicants Yale. Not being an URM or prodigy of any sort, I don't really have anything to distinguish my application from others. I am however a Type 1 Diabetic and though I read on other diabetic blogs that this alone doesn't give me any advantage in admissions, emphasizing the difficulties I've had to overcome dealing with it might. My question is how would I properly discuss this in my application? The most logical choice I assume would be to write about in the essay but my diagnosis was over ten years ago and may not be relevant (though it chronic disease I still face). My main concern is how I write about my condition without reducing my essay to just a "Pity Plea" for admission. Any help on how to approach this topic as and asset to my admissions and not a detriment would be much appreciated.

If you’re confused about how to approach your illness as a topic, then your illness clearly hasn’t had enough impact on your life to make for a meaningful essay.

Agreed. I think you ought to think about moments in your life that have characterized who you are and write about them. If your illness is just an inconvenience for you and not something that has strongly affected your life, then it probably won’t be a good essay.

I don’t know anything specific about Yale, but sometimes the best way to do this is to have your GC or a teacher mention it in a rec. Makes the point for you without having you come across as “poor me.”
