Do colleges generally prefer applications to be typed or hand-written?

Typed, online if available

This question comes up a lot, since some people believe that writting out an application would show more effort... Personally if I was an adcom, I'd rather have a typed application. Not only will it look more professional, but it also saves them the effort of trying to read your writting. Unless you've got incredable penmenship, type it.

I typed anything that was more than a few words long, but wrote the rest.

You mean you type the name in, etc? And you type the essay too, or do you type the essay and write the personal info?

For Brown the essays are actually hand written.

I wrote all my essays out. I wrote my common application essay 13 times! over and over and over... ahh.. I wrote out all my applications too. It takes about 45 minutes to copy each essay, maybe another 45 for the application? Also, I wrote out my University of California application, too. Another 6-7 hours, maybe. I think it's worth the effort. I don't think major universities or schools with tons of applications care, but the LAC's rewarded me handsomely so I guess it works in some places and it doesn't in others. shrug Personally, I'd tell the Original Poster to write everything out. But then again, it's just me. Best of luck,
