I’m in my second year of college and about to finally start my first electrical engineering classes. I’m just wondering what different kind of jobs and concentrations I can go into as an electrical engineering major and what they entail. I’m very interested in working for nasa or lockheed martin some day, and am wondering about the different careers post college.
You can reverse engineer this by looking up EE jobs posted by those two and seeing what qualifications they are looking for. This will also be dictated somewhat by the concentrations and curriculum your school offers.
It really depends. Our S did a NASA internship after his JR year in EE. He liked it and it may give you insight about a potential career there. He now does project management, flies drones, robotics, and I’m not sure what else. He got a job with the Fed govt. He was also offered fed jobs working on or with a nuclear sub. They would have sent him for additional ed. He declined those jobs.
EE roles at NASA and Lockheed Martin are very much varied because they do a lot of different things. You could be a systems engineer, hardware engineer, or even a software engineer with an EE degree depending on what you choose to specialize in. So I’d recommend focusing on the upper division requirements/electives and going forward based on what you like. If it is your absolute dream to work for NASA/Lockheed, you’ll probably find a role you’re mostly qualified for there no matter what you specialize in.
