I am a junior in high school and I want to eventually get into law school and become a lawyer. But as for now, I’m trying to see what kind of Lawyer I want to be so I can figure out what I want to major in. Obviously, I want to make a good amount of money. My moms pushing me towards corporate law with a major in Economics but I don’t like calculus. I’m also not a science person, and that is why I’m struggling considering everything these days involve math and science.
Any ideas on a type of law I can aim for after college and what I should major in in college to go along with it? Environmental? Property? Civil rights?
Your college major does not matter, unless you want to be a patent attorney and since you said you are “not a science person” then that does not seem to apply to you. Major in whatever you like.
Pick what you like, but something that makes you write a lot. It need not relate to an area of the law. Most ppl drift into an area of law in their first job or 2, unless they know they want to do criminal. It isn’t so much of a choice for a lot of them.
Just enjoy, and don’t borrow until LS:). Good luck!
Aim for any field of law other than taxes or patents and any major that doesn’t require calculus.
The learning-about-people majors (e.g. psychology, sociology, history) will advance your knowledge in the second biggest thing, after the law itself, a lawyer needs to know.
Yeah, you don’t have to aim for any specific type of law yet - many law students don’t really pick what area of law they want to enter until they are actually in law school. And even then, people change: 6 of the 8 current Supreme Court justices (and Scalia, may he rest in peace), for example, practiced both corporate and government law at some point in their careers.
Also, you should know that the market for lawyers is terrible right now. In the 8 years it will take you to finish high school, college, and law school (assuming you take no breaks) it may look completely different, but right now, the only lawyers getting good jobs and making lots of money are those who attended top (at the very most top 25-30; some would say only top 15-20) law schools.
Also, I don’t know what “a good amount of money” is to you but civil rights lawyers don’t make a ton of money. I don’t think environmental lawyers do either. Corporate law and civil litigation is where most of the money is in law.
I hope you realize that law school grads are having a rough go of it these days. If you don’t think you will get into a top 25 law school, I’d do something else with your life. Paying 150 Grand for a law degree you’ll never us it an expensive mistake. Check online about the statistics for unemployed law school graduates. The picture is NOT pretty
You may also get to law school and find that the type of law you thought you would be interested in is not really an area of law that interests you after all. Keep an open mind if and when you get to law school, and do what you like (not necessarily what will make you the most money).
