What types of student are there at Brown and what types of students thrive there? Are there any cliques or anything of that sort? Just wondering because I’m applying ED to Brown.
You’ll have students who love to compete. IVY= The league where students compete who’s better at which subject
All types. And contrary to #1, Brown is not at all known for being particularly competitive (and the 15~ current Brown students I know aren’t particularly competitive).
From the people I know who graduated from there, they were all very hard workers, but I wouldn’t say they were competitive people. As for clicques, I think all schools have them
1 doesn't sound like someone who has any significant experience with Brown. It's a school that seems to attract unique and quirky students, so you'll find all kinds there. There's a very collaborative atmosphere compared to a lot of other schools, because the way grading works doesn't really encourage competition. All schools have cliques, though.
Brown has a very diverse group of students. It’s really hard to generalize about the students who are there.
Because of the open curriculum, you need to be able to design your own schedule among thousands of choices. Any student who gets nervous at that idea – who is afraid that they won’t be able to make decisions when there are so many options – should not go to Brown. If you prefer working with a list of requirements, don’t go to Brown.
1 is really off base.
There are competitive students. There are collaborative students. There are nerds, jocks, goths, preppies – I’m old so I don’t even know what else to list, other than to say there are a lot of different types. They are all smart. They all care deeply about something.
And the social life is not guided by cliques the way it works in high school. There might be groups of friends, but if you don’t like one group, or they don’t like you, you go find another. There are probably some people who are snobby, but they don’t run the school the way it happens in high school.
