Typical dress at colgate?

I was wondering what most students wear at Colgate. Specific examples, please.

Do people dress up for class, and if so how much? I heard that a lot of people wear preppy clothes.

What do people wear on the weekends or after class?

Also, is there anything that you would suggest bringing that you either forgot or brought and found really helpful?

Are there any other things you didn't think to bring that are actually quite necessary?

Thank you! I'm not really acclimated to extreme cold and enormous amounts of snow.

Hi elleebee:
My son goes to Colgate and we are from southern California, so he REALLY wasn’t acclimated to the cold weather. And we found that the type of coat you need is not sold in southern California. We had to buy a jacket in Utica in October. This is his second year there, and the winter has been mild. He has definitely acclimated and at times doesn’t even wear a jacket when I think it’s freezing!

My son definitely does not dress preppy. Click on this link – it’s called United Colors of 'Gate – and it features a fashion section with what students are wearing [United Colors of 'Gate | United Colors of 'Gate](http://www.uncolgate.com/) Sure, some kids are preppy, but others are not. You see all sorts of styles and fashions there.

If my son and his friends are any indication, they are definitely not dressing up for class. Half of the time they look like they just rolled out of bed and didn’t change! The girls, I have to say, do look a bit nicer when going to class.

I’m sure a student can answer your questions better than a parent, but the online magazine will definitely help you get an idea of what the students are wearing!

Thank you.

The link above is pretty cool, but a little “model” oriented to reflect real life. I’m glad someone put it together, but you should not think that most Colgate students spend a lot of time doing their hair or accessorizing their outfits! It’s college, for goodness sake. The average student, wherever they come from, wears what people from age 18-22 wear and that is sweatshirts, hoodies, tee shirts, pants of various kinds, and you name it.

My daughter is also from southern California but has put together a good winter wardrobe of a down jacket, boots, and so on. Easy to do from any seller online like LLBean or REI. You don’t have to buy the clothes in your home town, by any means. Even have them shipped to Colgate to save hauling them there.

She mostly wears regular clothes. It’s not a style show, not dress-up time, and not a fashion-oriented school. It is not preppie, but some people there are preppie. It’s sloppy for some students, neat for others. Among 2800 students from all other the country and the world, you are pretty much allowed to dress any way you want. Really. And I wouldn’t give it a second thought. No propellor beanies, though, and shorts in February will leave your knees cold. I’m pretty sure of that, speaking of California kids.

Hi,

As a recent Colgate grad, a woman (it looks I am the first of either to respond), and someone who would have likely asked this question before I went to college I wanted to add my two cents.

I would say that yes, the overall style is quite preppy. Girls do not wear sweatpants to class unless you are on a sports team, and then you wear your team’s sweats. In the few short months of nice weather (Aug-Oct and April-May) sundresses and skirts are common. Button-down shirts are a staple, as well as pearl earrings and headbands. Cardigans, since even the warm months still get a little chilly. Cardigans will not be warm enough for winter wear, so make use of them in the fall. The overall look is not too “done up” - it’s preppy in that it’s relaxed but stylish. Makeup is minimal. Other things that abound are rain boots, boat shoes, cute flats, bows, comfy stylish t-shirts…preppy, really.

In the winter, style gets abandoned a little as people desperately try to keep warm walking to class. It seems like you can’t put on enough layers to stay warm. You WILL need a good pair of water proof winter boots - those paths get really sloshy, and you will most likely have to walk through several feet of snow at one point or another. Then leggings/skinny jeans to go with that. A lot of people wear long underwear or a pair of leggings under a pair of jeans on days when it gets below 10 degrees or so. Also expect to wear a hat and mittens and scarf as part of your everyday wear - it’s just too uncomfortable not to. In the winter, big thick comfy cable-knit or fisherman’s sweaters are common.

I hope this didn’t scare you off - you get used to the cold and learn how to deal with it, I promise. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Oh, and just wanted to mention - the United Colors of Gate is not “too model to reflect real life”. That was not a set-up. That’s what students really wear on an everyday basis. It is more dressed up than other colleges, for sure.
