What to Wear for School

What do typical people wear for classes. The school I'm going to has no uniform and I'm clueless as to what to wear. If any current prep school students could post where you go and what kinda of clothes you wear (ex. jeans or cords. sweaters or sweatshirts) that would be a big help.

Plus, it's cold there...so, do any of you wear Northface, or is that like nothing up there. Where I'm from, it's like the coolest clothes for cold weather.

Thanks :)

northface jackets are immensely popular

for school, stock up on jeans, khakis, and maybe some cords. sweaters might be a bit over the top. t-shirts and sweatshirts are good, as are polos. wear what you'd normally wear!

I live in Texas (BTW...it's about 102 right now) and I've had a uniform my whole life. I own tons of polos and sweaters and jeans, but I just don't want to go to school having all of the wrong clothes.

Do a lot of kids wear the school sweatshirts and stuff?
What do most people wear to class? (jeans and sweatshirts or more like cords and sweaters)

again, cords and sweaters are a bit over the top. jeans, polos, tees, and sweatshirts are the way to go. dress shirts and jeans look good too.

I hate TNF Denali jackets so, so, so, SO much.
I love The North Face, just hate the Denali jackets--they're the ones which are so unfortunately popular. I'm infamous for spreading my outdoorswear brands around, though. I'm a huge whore for REI. Just practical technical things, is what I'm found wearing... I try to hide tags and brand labels as much as possible.

That's not the norm, obviously. Clothing norms are dictated wildly differently depending on where you are, there's no one solid prep school attire character, though there are (sadly) commonly shared themes. How I miss the clothing of my public school past...

Apparently my alma mater recently adopted a dress code: no bathing suits or pajamas. Sad, since when I was there I basically wore pajama pants and a tank top to class every day, as did pretty much everybody else. :P

People are right--clothing varies a lot from school to school. You're best off asking someone currently at your new school. But don't stress too much. When I went I was really worried that I needed "preppier" clothes to fit in at my new school. After about a week actually there such worries seemed really silly. People turned out to be much less concerned about wearing the 'right' clothes at my bs than they had been at my public school. Bring casual, comfortable stuff and don't worry about it!

sao, we are also from TX, by next school year you'll be wearing flip flops year round. lol At Middlesex, jeans are not allowed. I'm certain of that/maybe.lol

saolcecseer -

Don't know if you're male or female, but the school our S attended last year had no uniform and a loose dress code by prep standards. Our S pretty much wore khaki pants or khaki shorts with collared polos to classes all year with flip-flops or tennis shoes. He had an REI jacket with removable lining for really cold days, but last year was a pretty mild winter. Most of the kids wore their varsity jackets if they were in a sport season. Jeans of any color were not allowed in class and collared shirts (i.e. polos) were required for class. They could wear a t-shirt under a hoodie, but would have to keep the hoodie on in the hot classroom. I'm not sure what the girls wore, but definitely no jeans to class.

Flip-flops in the snow seems to be a prep thing.

There isn't a dress code. As long as you don't look like a whore. Oh yeah, I'm a female.

I'm not worried about not having the right "brand name" or not having preppy enough clothes...I'm PLENTY preppy. Jeans are allowed at my new school and yes, I must admit, I agree that flip flops in the winter is a prep thing.

I was just wondering what people wear or if it was the same as what we wear down here.

Also, you are all going to think I'm really stupid for asking this...buuuuut, I am having the hardest time finding bedding for my dorm. I've looked everywhere online and I can't find anything. Any suggestions?

saolcecseer- I found all of my bedding at different linen stores like Bed, Bath, and Beyond. I also ordered some sheets off of PBteen. Not all of the styles come in the right size, but some of them do.

As for what to wear. Everybody wears different things. Usually I wear jeans, khakis, polos, t-shirts, and sweaters. Some people get dressed up to go to classes, and some people don't even bother getting dressed at all. No one really cares what you wear, since everyone is so different at bs anyways.

Thanks sugerkim! :)

I had a dress code, but pretty much every Friday we had a free dress day during my junior and senior year.

You can pretty much wear anything that's somewhat presentable. And somewhat is a relative term. Jeans were common, as was athletic wear...and PJs (though they asked us to refrain from that during my senior year). Just wear whatever you like to wear. My choice was usually sweats and sneakers or jeans and flip flops (my jeans never looked right with my shoes for some reason). At my school, a bunch of kids wore apparel from the school store or from their sports team. I went to an all-guys school, so none of us really cared...except when someone had an especially cool shirt or something.

most of the girls at my school wear designer jeans or ae jeans. fleece jackets/ rain jackets from north face and patagonia, also a lot of people wear stuff from jcrew, but nothing that is too preppy, the most popular shoes would definately be the wicked good moccasins from llbean, and people do wear sweaters

Thanks bwmash.

You can never go wrong with pink and khaki.

man, can't get no love for the sweaters on this board. all these people telling you to just wear the predictable crappy polos (PCP.... that should tell you something) are overlooking the fact that you'll get more respect for figuring out your own style.

well, if you're going up north, make sure you've got a nice pair of durable boots for the rain and snow

:P

yeah, for the schools that dont have a uniform, the dress code is basically the same - wear comfortable clothing like khakis and sweatshirts (especially for northeast schools, it's cold up there in new england!) but dont bring revealing or innapropriate clothing (i.e. t-shirts with funny-innapropriate slogans) didnt your school send you any notes about dressing?

ditto on the boots! i havent actually brought snow/rain boots for two or three years now, due to our light winters and reasonable amounts of snow, but im definitely going to go get boots. ll bean is a good source, i think. and im definitely bringing my northface.
