lol why is the first thing you mention being Mexican? Anyways, I don't see why you'd be at any disadvantage compared to anyone else. Ivies are tough for everbody so do your best to make yourself unique.

Wow you look pretty good for HYP! Something about us music guys; we always have good grades. Why don't you mosey to my thread and chance my thread?

Would it be wise for me to apply Stanford EA? I'm not entirely confident in my essays right now and I don't know if they'll get any better within 3 days. Would it look bad if I sent my app in on the deadline?

Anyone at all?

Without AA you would not stand a terrible chance at HYPS. With it, who knows. I wouldn't be surprised if you got into one of them.

ROFL WHAT? You have 50 points higher than him on the SAT, yet he's got a higher GPA, he's a first gen student, great SAT II scores, more ECs, his family has a low income, and despite this he still maintains a 4.0 and is valedictorian.

You are going to tell me that you truly believe that your chances are better than his because of 50 points? Seems like someone is just trying to shelter their ego.

OP, you've got great chances, not just for being a URM, but for your stats and all. Your sats are a little below some of hte mid 50%, but not by much, and honestly your ECs more than make up for it. Per school I would say:

Harvard - Reach. It's a reach for everyone though.
Ditto for princeton
Ditto for Yale
Stanford - Slight reach. Reason I say this is because of your desired major combined with your stats. Stanford loves kids who make the best of bad situations.
U Chicago - Toss up. They are very strange in their admissions process as I'm sure you know. With good essays, recs, and demonstrated interest, High Match, Low Reach.
Cornell - Match. Most likely in. I know a ton of Over represented URM's (if that makes sense) such as one of my asian friends who got in with like a 1900 without many outstanding Ecs. You should be in here.
John Hopkins - Not to familiar with, but most likely a match.

Good luck bro, I see great things ahead for you.

Thanks hyakku, I appreciate it. Anyone have any chances for me at Rice? I'm pretty interested in it since it's close to where I live.

You'd stand a fighting chance, but I would say your ethnic background will get you into at least one of the HYPS.

You're Hispanic. I think you can get into YPS but not H.

Thats funny, if you didnt want people to talk about affirmative action, why do you emphasize that you're Mexican American then?

AA obviously exists and you know it and you just want to check your chances with it.

Well, the emphasis was mainly to grab people's attention since there are a lot of threads out right now.

I want people to talk about how AA will affect me, but not talk about how they feel about AA (since people do have very strong opinions towards it), if that makes any sense. I'm sorry if I wasn't specific enough.

if your interested in medicine then apply to the baylor/bcm program (baylor college of medicine is one the best med schools in the country)

and you said you liked rice so try rice's baylor medical school program (although this one is EXTREMELY difficult to get into but you should try anyway)

by the way, i say you get into maybe 2 of HYPS

you can't just send a few AP scores and not the other. if you send one, all must be sent.

Well, I'm talking about self reporting on the application. I'll just put in the 3 5's and add the other ones I plan on taking (7 this year), so I should be able to fill out all the AP blanks on the app.

hpa10, I know about the Rice/Baylor thing. It'd be really hard for me to get into since I haven't been super involved in anything medical related yet. It's super hard to get into it even if you did.

Also, I think they require a 1400 SAT or 32 ACT, but I got a 1390 and a 31...kinda sucks.

Without AA, I would say you're qualified but not spectacular. There isn't anything distinguishing that would allow people to call you a almost a "match" candidate. Then again, few kids who apply to HYPS are truly amazing shoe-in's in the eyes of the admission officers there. With AA though, you rest way above most in your ethnic group and have a great shot at the top schools in the country.

Thank you?

But like I was saying, if I'm not 100% confident on my apps right now, should I wait and apply RD to Stanford? I mean, it will be a huge applicant pool regardless.

I'm curious. How many Mexicans (and I mean "Mexicans" since both my parents are from Mexico) do you guys know that have applied to HYPS?

Anyone else?

Definitely a lot less than Caucasians and Asians, I'll tell you that. :P

That's your advantage though; you have a much greater chance at HYPS than most people on this site. Just keep working hard and I'm pretty confident you'll get in at least one of the elite schools (or, as most qualified URM's discover, all of them haha).

You'll go "1" for grades, "2" for test scores, and "2" for ECs. You'll get a -1 for your URM status, thus needing a "2" on the essay (an essay that is better than most applicants to these school, but not a "wow").

See my note on I<3Pi's thread entitled "Chances for an international" where I comment on which books to get to improve your essay writing.

Note that most people applying to these schools are top-level, so your essay will have to impress. Write from your heart and describe your experiences in great, vivid detail. The books I mentioned in the other thread will help you understand what I mean by this.

Best of luck to you.

Well, the thing is, I've already gotten two B's this year, an 88 in AP Economics and probably (hopefully) a low to mid B in Calculus AP this six weeks, since I got a 71 on a test (no A's on that test in the class).

Will this hurt my chances when I send the mid-year report?
