I'm very curious about the whole college thing, and I was just wondering if any current college students would mind sharing what their typical schedule looks like? Like daily/weekly with course load and homework, extracurriculars, and how much free time you have? Or any information would be great! I'm just having a hard time visualizing myself in a college setting and seeing some reality might help a little bit :)

Everyone’s schedule is different depending on their circumstances. Some majors have lengthy lab sections that occur at night. Some people attend school full time, but only minimum credit load - others at standard full time credit load - others at max, others at overload. Some only attend part time. Some people have on campus jobs, some people have off campus jobs, some people have more than one. Commuting also plays a role - some students schedule all of their classes back to back, creating a “drive thru” college experience, while others have breaks/gaps that they use to go back to their dorm/residence hall to study, nap, socialize. Athletic commitments and extracurricular involvement also factor in. Family obligations. Outside academic obligations (tutoring, office hours, studying in general.) And then there’s just personal preference. Lots of things.

I don’t think there is any “typical” schedule. Once you get to college, you’ll become acclimated to your environment and tailor your schedule to accommodate you and your own needs.

I’m a first-semester freshman. This semester has kind of sucked and I’ve had trouble adjusting, so I don’t do as many activities as I should be doing (and I don’t have a job), but this might help.

I’m a commuter, and I’m usually on campus until relatively late because I like to study in the library. Most of my homework assignments are time consuming, but I don’t have a specific consistent way of completing my assignments. I just work on whatever has the closest deadline.

Sunday
Usually go to the boathouse for paddling practice with concrete canoe for a few hours.

In between classes I usually eat lunch (after calculus most days) or study somewhere. I don’t usually go back to my dorm until I’m done for the day. As such, I’m usually done with most of my work by dinner time, and have the evening open for group projects, socializing, watching tv, etc

Friday:
9:30-10:20 intro engineering lecture
10:30-11:20 Physics lecture
12:30-1:20 Bio gen ed

For extra curriculars:
Wednesdays I go to a club meeting for civil engineers and play football at the rec fields.
Weekends I work on projects like concrete canoe, steel bridge, and mars rover

For homework:
Calc 3 and physics have stupid homework assignments because they are all done through websites. I can’t wait until I get to upper division courses where there aren’t as many that rely on online sources. Calc 3 usually takes me 3 hours a week max and physics takes about 1.5.

Im a first year taking 6.5 units, which is equivalent to approx 22.75 credits.

I’m a junior double-majoring in French and Writing and Rhetoric. I’m taking 16 credit hours while working 2 jobs, doing a TA-type thing, and running a student org. It’s definitely NOT easy and I had a really hard time during the beginning of the semester, but breaking down my entire week schedule like this has honestly helped me succeed amidst the craziness.

Monday:

9:20-10:27: French grammar
10:40-11:47: French literature
12-1:07: French composition
2-4ish: meet with my org’s board members to work on stuff (our main work starts next semester, so we mainly plan stuff at the moment)

Saturday:
8-4ish: work
6ish- go out if I can or work on homework if I have a lot to do

Sunday:
homework pretty much on and off all day. I also check email for student org purposes and have lately been trying to get some GRE studying in

This will all change next semester, of course, but I will ultimately have fun creating another detailed schedule to help me get everything done. :)

My schedule is a little weird this semester.

Monday:
8:30-9:20 - finite element class
9:30-10:20 - intro to environmental science
10:45-2:00 - work
2:30-3:20 - physical properties of biological materials
4:30 - 5:20 - senior design
I only have senior design about half the time so if I don’t have class, I’ll go home and take about an hour long nap before dinner. Then after dinner, I start homework. If I have senior design, I’ll eat and then shower.

Tuesday
9:30-10:20 - intro to gis
10:30-11:20 - senior seminar
I go eat lunch and do homework until
1:30-3:20 physical properties of bio materials lab
Then I go home and change
4:00-8:30 - work
Then I’ll do homework and shower until bed.

Wednesday
8:30-9:20 finite element lecture
9:30-10:20 intro to environmental science
Then I’ll do homework, nap, eat, shower… Basically some combination
2:30-3:20 physical properties of biological materials
3:30-5 intro to GIS lab - I only have this every other week but afterwards I’ll eat dinner and do homework. Chill. Whatever.

Thursday
8:30-9:20 finite element lab
9:30-10:20 intro to gis
10:30-11:20 senior seminar
Im done with classes for the day so I’ll do homework and eat.
2:00-2:30 meeting with my partner and professor for senior design
I’ll use the rest of my evening to finish up my homework because I usually go out or watch Netflix Thursday nights.

Friday
9:30-10:20 intro to environmental science
I usually turn in homework after this class for finite element. Then I’ll either work on stuff for next week or nap and also have lunch or continue relaxing and not care.

Saturday is a free day for me.

Sundays I work 10-2:30 and have chapter at 6:30 for my sorority. I usually go to bed in the 11-2 range most nights.

Next semester, I have most of my classes at 11:30 or after so maybe I’ll get up earlyish to do work and what not in order to get a decent amount of sleep.

I’m a freshman at Cornell University right now. I don’t yet have a major. I planned my first semester out to not be too overwhelming and to leave time for work, schoolwork, and extracurriculars. I also write for the newspaper, so at random times throughout the week I will be gathering sources, conducting interviews, and writing stories. This is my typical weekly schedule for this semester:

Monday:
(I start off most of my days by waking up to my alarm at 8:10, going back to sleep, getting up to my 8:30 alarm, getting ready, and sometimes going to the cafe in my dorm to grab coffee)
9:05 - 9:55 AM: Elementary Modern Hebrew I
10:10 - 11:00 AM: Introduction to Psychology
11:15 - 12:05 PM: The Nature of the Universe
Then I’m done with classes for the day, so I get lunch at a dining hall and usually do homework in my room
4:45 - 6:00 PM: Pep Band
Then I get a quick dinner in a dining hall
7:00 - 10:00 PM: Work at my job in a library

Tuesday:
9:05 - 9:55 AM: Elementary Modern Hebrew I
10:10 - 11:25 AM: Cultural Politics of Reproduction
Then I get lunch in a dining hall; sometimes I do homework in my room
1:25 - 2:15 PM: Music and the Mind
2:30 - 3:20 PM: The Nature of the Universe Discussion
Then I’m done for the day. I usually do work in my dorm or watch Netflix or take a nap.

Wednesday:
9:05 - 9:55 AM: Elementary Modern Hebrew I
10:10 - 11:00 AM: Introduction to Psychology
11:15 - 12:05 PM: The Nature of the Universe
Then lunch and homework. Also for some reason, most Wednesdays I like to pick a movie to watch in bed during the afternoon
5:30 - 7:00 PM: Swing Dance I
Then dinner and finishing up my homework in my dorm

Thursday:
9:05 - 9:55 AM: Elementary Modern Hebrew I
10:10 - 11:25 AM: Cultural Politics of Reproduction
I don’t have time for a full dining hall lunch so I usually grab a burrito at an on-campus cafe
12:30 - 1:30 PM: Chamber Winds - Flute Ensemble
On Thursdays I try to reserve time to go to the gym in the afternoon in between doing work
6:00 - 10:00 PM: Work at my job in a library

Friday:
9:05 - 9:55 AM: Elementary Modern Hebrew I
10:10 - 11:00 AM: Introduction to Psychology
11:15 - 12:05 PM: The Nature of the Universe
Then I’m done for the week!

My weekends are variable; often I spend most of my time off campus doing various things, sometimes I write a story for the newspaper, sometimes I play with the pep band in hockey games, etc. It’s definitely all been manageable and a pretty good semester overall!

Friday:
12:10-1:00PM: Modern Japanese

After my classes end, I either go home or to the library. Since I didn’t buy the required texts for my history and art history courses in order to save money, I have to go check out the texts on reserve in the library in order to catch up on the weekly readings, and you can only reserve a book for 2 hours.

Thanks to all of you for posting! It’s cool to see how much variability there is in everyone’s lives in college as opposed to high school - so excited! Thanks again!

I’m a junior double majoring in computer science and linguistics, taking 16 units this quarter.

Monday:
10:00-10:50 Theory of computation discussion
11:00-11:50 Linguistic analysis II lecture
Rest of the day: I usually spend the afternoon getting work done and lounge around in the evening. Depending on what I need to get done, I sometimes work on stuff in the evening, or possibly go have dinner with a friend.

Tuesday:
9:00-10:20 Programming languages lecture
10:30-11:50 Theory of computation lecture
A few hours where I’m doing whatever I need to get done that day, whether it’s working on assignments, doing laundry, etc.
4:40-6:00 Philosophy of language lecture/discussion
After class: Usually by this point I’m worn out from my classes and am either getting minor stuff done or just hanging out in my apartment.

Wednesday:
11:00-11:50 Linguistic analysis lecture
12:10-1:00 Programming languages discussion
Rest of the day: See Monday

Thursday:
Same as Tuesday

Friday:
11:00-11:50 Linguistic analysis lecture
1:10-2:00 Linguistic analysis discussion
Rest of the day: Get any remaining work done, and usually meet up with friends that evening/night to watch shows and movies and just catch up with what happened during the week.

Weekend:
Anything else I need to get done by the next week, some time lounging around, some time for social stuff. Basically catch up on work plus miscellaneous stuff.

I’m definitely one that needs to schedule in some downtime every day (usually at the end of the day), otherwise I’d go nuts. Personally I like having all my classes in a row to get them done so that I can use the rest of the day to do whatever else needs to get done. That’s also partly because I live off campus and it’s a pain to keep going back and forth between campus and my apartment. I also tend to go for morning classes when possible, both because I’m a morning person and so I (hopefully) have most of the afternoon and evening to get other stuff done.
