go to reed! such a unique opportunity that will be

University of Chicago..... more 'prestigious' if that matters to you; it has such a great intellectual atmosphere. Plus you have Chicago as your backyard.

both have the same intellectual atmosphere but Chicago gets the nod in terms of academic strength and the fact its in Chicago.

chicago! it seems like an extremely intellectually challenging, interesting school

Reed. I used to live near Reed and the campus/location rocks! Plus Reed is a GREAT school and you'll get a lot of personal attention! You're really in a win-win situation though. Both schools are top notch.

Reed ranks pretty high on quality of student life and happiest students. There's also less of a rep for intense intellectual atmosphere at all times. UChicago's good and prestigious, but it's also "where fun goes to die."

2kool, Love your post. You are a good writer!

You sound like you would be happy either place. Maybe flip a coin to decide. If you get a pang, switch.

I like Chicago (the city) better than Portland. In fact, I'll be moving to Portland in a few months, but if I had a choice I'd move to Chicago. That said, Portland has milder weather, and the city's a bit safer/cleaner than Chicago (it's also less than half the size).

Can't say much about the schools...don't know too much about them.

You might consider future PhD production a measure of academic strength.

Reed wins in these categories:

all disciplines
biological sciences
chemistry
humanities
history
foreign languages
political science
physical sciences
math and computer sciences
sciences and engineering
physics
area and ethnic studies
linguistics
english literature
medical sciences

U Chicago wins in these categories:

social sciences
anthropology

Plus, Portland was called North Americas Best Big City by Money Magazine.

Reed and U Chic -- in my day -- were two schools that made you read the 100 great books. I know U Chic has lightened up on this and I think Reed is still aiming toward a part that goal. Only St. Johns --as far as I know -- continues for that quest.

But, for my 2 cents, Reed or U Chic are the same for postgraduate schools. Neither gives you an edge over the other, each gives you an edge over most others.

I hate drizzling rain -- for that I would stay away from Reed. I also hate cold -- for that I would stay away from the windy city. But, Chicago is still one of the great cities of America. Illinois, without Chicago, is just another Iowa. And, that fact leads the big city to have a friendlier environment than its populated peers.

And, the pizza in the South Side of Chicago is tops!!!!
