U Mass v. U of Vermont for political science major

Our D was accepted to both colleges. The financial picture is about the same. My sense is that U Mass has a better reputation, but i don’t know if that impression is accurate. D loves skiing and the outdoors, but there are lots of things she likes in the area of U Mass too. Anyone have an opinion on which school might be better for a political science/pre-law/government major? The other schools being considered are Temple, Loyola Maryland and Towson. Thanks!

Which UMass? They have very different reputations… UMass Amherst is highly regarded in my area at least.

Yes UMass Amherst is generally considered to be a stronger school academically. And it’s more selective. Especially business school hard sciences cs and engineering. But UVM is really terrific too. And political science would be equally good. And if your student is into activism or social justice issues. UVM is in the hotbed of social and environmental activism.

UVM is a hipper environment and the access to skiing etc is a different level than Amherst. In terms of access to options.

Of course southern Vt skiing is pretty close to Amherst relatively speaking. And there’s the berkshires too for other outdoor sports and activities/options.

Thank you so much for these insightful comments! Very helpful.
