U Mich vs USC?

Is Michigan stronger/higher rated academically over USC? Curious how flagship state schools (e.g Mich. Cal or UCLA) are viewed over USC in terms of alumni network for jobs, internships and overall job placement. I realize it is dependent on your area of study, but assuming same major, would a company prefer a Michigan grad over USC (or vice versa)?

I would say that USC has one of the 5 best alumni networks in the country and Trojans are as rabid supporters of their school as there are out there. That said, you will find Michigan alumni all over the nation and the world as well. Job placement will depend on where you want to work-USC will be stronger throughout California while most Chicago/NYC firms prefer Michigan alums.

“USC will be stronger throughout California while most Chicago/NYC firms prefer Michigan alums.”

Alabama would be stronger in Alabama
Missississippi would be stronger in Mississippi
Southern California would be stronger in Southern California

See how that works?

Haha I don’t know if Bama or Ole Miss would be stronger anywhere.

I’m not so sure maizeandblue21. They sure seem to stick together tightly for football. ;-)

"Is Michigan stronger/higher rated academically over USC? "

Strictly talking academically, Michigan is stronger and more highly rated.

Not sure how this comparison can be made without acknowledging majors…of course, UMich is stronger in certain areas but how can you discount USC school of cinema arts or Annenberg? As an example…

Yes of course USC has some areas where it is better than Michigan, but than again so do most top schools. Overall however, the academics departments at Michigan are ranked higher for most comparable disciplines.

As a USC alum with a kid attending U Michigan, i am finding that she has amazing opportunities for networking, the full college experience and a substantially - in my opinion - safer environment than at USC. Crime happens everywhere, but the neighborhood around campus feels safer in Ann Arbor than in LA.

I have spent a great deal of time on the USC campus, both as an undergrad and in recent years. It has much going for it. Not trying to be dismissive of that. There are great opportunities that are available in LA that might be hard to come by in A2. Internships and wearing Rainbo sandals year round, for example.

The weather is so radically different that as a native SoCal girl, moving to Michigan is a shock.

Honestly, you can get a good education just about anywhere. Even UCLA. (sorry Bruins. Couldn’t resist!)
