I have been accepted to University of Arizona and Arizona State University as a Communications major but I would also like to add Journalism as a double major, as I would like to eventually go into sports broadcast journalism. I am an out of state student so all I know about the two schools is what I've gained from online research. I know that ASU's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication is a highly respected school but I also know that the University of Arizona seems to be an overall more respected university. I feel like there may be more opportunities with ASU since the Walter Cronkite school is in downtown phoenix and I would have the opportunity to dorm there but I don't want to end up at school with limited opportunities and a bad reputation incase I have a change in heart with my major. If anyone has input on the differences in the two social scenes that would be helpful as well. Please help I currently have a deposit down at both universities!

The downtown jounalism school is great. BEAUTIFUL and impressive.
Have you visited both universities? If you plan to stay/start in AZ it’s not like there aren’t LOTS of folks from both schools in the professional world.

I’d go with ASU and its school of journalism. Well-respected and connected, which is more important to journalism than overall school reputation. What will matter most is your internships and contacts.
However I’d advise you to have another major for your double major, be it Spanish (for the Spanish-speaking market), political science, economics, environmental sciences, arts/media studies…
I assume you’ll be a transfer student, right?

@MYOS1634 No I just graduated, I currently have a deposit down at both schools so I will be attending one in the fall. Thank you for your advice I’ll be visiting both schools this coming week!

Phoenix is THE major media market in Arizona as well as where most of the major pro and college sports are, including the 2015 Super Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl every year. If you want internship opportunities in sports broadcasting, they are going to be through the J-school in Phoenix. This seems like a slam dunk - ASU.

Last I checked both schools were in the 100-150 ranking bracket. What difference does it make if one is a little higher than the other… can you actually conceive of somebody saying “Oh, UofA is #122 and ASU is only #140. You can’t possibly not choose UofA?”

@DunninLA Rankings mean nothing. Obviously this students concern isn’t which school is more prestigious overall. They are concerned about the overall college experience and what they will get from the school and opportunities. Something that most kids here don’t care about.

Id go to ASU. Slightly better journalism reputation than UA. Good thing for you, sports are big at both schools.
