"Remember, Animal House was filmed there!"
Yea, but Revenge of the Nerds was filmed at University of Arizona!

Tough choice because I like both schools

They're both OK. I know people who went to both. If you're planning on a business major AZ is very good. AZ is in Tucson- which sucks. OR has the rain issue. AZ is huge. OR is medium size. It's a flip of the coin. You can get a good education at either place.

^Yeah. I've heard that Tucson is horrible. "Boring hillbilly town," I think, was the exact term used to describe it.

So how does the town of Eugene compare to Tucson? How is Oregon's party scene?

Worried student... you worry me. sounds like you'll be majoring in beers of the world and a sure bet to take 6-8 yrs to graduate. If it's the party scene that you want then U of A is the choice for you. U of O can't compare. Good luck

Actually, I'm majoring in Econ major. While you might not like to party, I like to balance my academics and social life. I get my work done and then I go out.

Good luck"i'm sorry mate but that's a dumb comment.I can party very hard and get A's...for me having a good time is very important...so i difinately understand worried student.
I wouls go with U of oregon just because i don't think i could stand the arizona hot weather.

^^ It's not that hot. Only during summer months, and if you probably won't be there then anyways.

pateta00- have you applied to all three and been to the schools? ASU was too big for me, but I really liked UofA and UofO. I partied at UofA with a friend so I know I'd have a good time there. I don't know as much about UofO's party scene. It might not compare to UofA, but is the party scene decent?

I have never been to U of oregon, but from what i have heard , it's a hippish enviroment a little like uc berkeley. Now the party scene, it doesn't compare to U of arizona..
what i like about U of arizona is it's location, you have phoenix and L.A so i guess the job placement would be better.
Just keep in mind that academically both are very good schools.

BTW i applyied to U of arizona and U of oregon.

Did you apply as a freshman or as a transfer?

pateta00-

I can't say much about the University of Oregon, but I'll try and give you some insight on ASU and Arizona. First, I'll start off by saying I live about 30 minutes north of ASU's Tempe campus, but that I have a brother who is a sophomore at UArizona, double-majoring in business and history. I've been to both, and each is equally beautiful. I feel ASU's campus is much less spread out, and more "big-city" vibe than Tucson. Tempe is really being redone, with new facilities popping up literally weekly. The mayor is revamping the whole city. ASU's new dean is also revamping the whole campus-- many buildings are completely new, whereas many of UA's buildings are in need of repair (according to my brother). UA's campus is surrounded by the city's historic district, making it a more suburban campus. Frat houses literally back to homes of Tucson families. It is also a lot less centralized-- there are less convenience stores and less food options on Tucson's campus. My brother found eating on-campus and shopping for necessities to be a bit of a problem. UA's dorms are also older, smaller and less clean. ASU has a huge freshman dorm opening this year, as well as two new ones that opened last year. Both campus's have the palm trees and the cacti, but UA's has a bit more big green areas. Like I said, it's more suburban. It's also a bit older and more Hispanic than Tempe. My brother loves everything about Tucson (it has "history to it," he says), and I find it dirty. But then again, he drives a '73 Nova, and I drive an '06 Lexus. So really, it depends on what you like.

As far as academics, UA's business program is ranked highly for a public university. I know it tops ASU's program, but other than that, I don't know much. UA is known for better general academic, but in the honors department, ASU's Barrett Honors College surpasses UA's Honors program by far. In fact, Barrett was selected as the Best Honors College in the nation by Reader's Digest in 2006, and is ranked fourth for the highest number of National Merit Scholars in the nation (beat only by Harvard, Princeton, and Yale). Also, ASU is in the process of building a completely new honors campus, with new dorms, a separate cafeteria, a separate rec center, etc. for honors students. So if you are applying as a general student, the academics at UA are greater than ASU, but if you are looking into an honors program, UA is not even comparable to ASU.

Financially, UA is slightly cheaper than ASU (by a few hundred dollars), but ASU's merit scholarships are much larger (and easier to obtain) than UA's. UA's dorms run a bit cheaper, but then again, they aren't nearly as nice as most of ASU's.

Socially, both have great party scenes, but ASU's is known as being rowdier. That could change, though, because administration is cutting down on partying and has shut down a number of frats lately, due to numerous high schoolers at parties, drinking underage. The ASU frat boy is definitely more of the stereotypical type than UArizona's. UA's frats are more centralized than ASU's though-- with a less urban campus, it's easier to get large houses on/nearby campus.

Well, I hope that helps. If you have any questions or such, feel free to ask.

My D is in the honors college at U of A, transfered from CA and loves it. There are lots of research opportunities. She lives in university apts a block from school but not owned by the school, cheaper then the dorms but a full apt with great amenities, pool, spa, big screen TV room, computer room, fitness center etc. She did not seriously consider the school as a freshman and as a freshman actually got more money from ASU Baretts then U of A. ASU was too much concrete and had a party school rep verified by many she knows there.I know folks at Barretts who love it however . Tucson is a pretty town surrounded by mts on all sides with tons of outdoor activities. There are plently of grocery stores and great food places around campus but I agree campus food is fair to poor. My D likes most all her classes so far, majoring in Psychology and Spanish both great programs.

ASU is getting rid of Frat Row (the row of fraternity houses, there aren't any sorority houses).

If you are looking for a greek system, definitely go to UofA, if it doesn't matter, check out both schools.

Seriously, each school is great. Go to the one you would feel more comfortable at.

By the way, pr22, I am exactly like you, I live 30 minutes North of ASU, but my sister is a junior at ASU.

^^arizonamom....I thought that your daughter went to USD?

She just transferred second semester sophomore yr, surprised us actually and she is very happy. She misses San Diego but feels the atmoshere here fits her personality better.

Honors programs mean nothing. Its just a way to entice highly qualified people to pick a certain school. U of A is a top ranked school. It has particulary strong math, science, business, and law programs. It's #1 in space research. I'd say its much better than the other two. Yes it may admit lower people academically but that doesn't mean its any worse because of that. When I visited I met people who had gotten into Ivy League schools. Personally, I'm probably going to have to decide between U of A, UVA, and William and Mary.

Ignorance... ^^^

While I can't really say much about Oregon, U of A is a very highly ranked school. If you're from a big city, such as somewhere in the Northeast or California, then Arizona will definitely be a big surprise for you. I attended a National Merit Seminar at U of A, and I fell in love with the place. You could spend your entire 4 years there without ever having to leave campus, so it seems like a very comfortable atmosphere, where everyone is there for essentially the same goals. From what I understand, U of A also has a very highly-ranked business program, as well as many other strong programs, should you change your mind. I was never even considering U of A until my trip, and it completely blew me away. Regardless of what you choose, I'm sure you will enjoy yourself. Should you happen to choose U of A, I will be the first to welcome you there as a fellow incoming freshman. Hope to see you at Freshman orientation, and I hope you find the college you seek.
