Guess the only benefit would be whether we travel to Philadelphia or not…undecided on whether we just take our chances & go to the on campus audition & hope she makes it to the call back part…

I have limited experience with The University of the Arts - we live about two hours away and have visited the school twice, once for an ordinary week day visit and once for an Open House. My daughter also did a one-week Acting Intensive thrre the summer before this summer. The school was wonderful and you couldn’t meet nicer kids. My daughter’s acting instructor for the one week intensive was terrific. My impression from the school’s website is that they’d prefer you come to campus. I don’t know if they give any “corrections” during the audition or not, but if they do do that as part of the audition, you wouldn’t be able to convey how well you take direction from just a pre-screen. They’re a really small school and I would imagine it would be easier for them to tell whether your child would be a good fit for their program by seeing your child in person. Likewise, you can check them out and see if your child would like the environment and vibe of the school. It’s not a traditional campus with greenery, trees, etc. Some kids would like the city feel of the school, others might hate it. I’m not sure if UArts is a top choice of your child, or at the bottom of the list but if your child is seriously considering the school and you can afford a visit (both time-wise and money-wise), my advice would be NOT to send in a pre-screen, but instead, go for the live audition. I just don’t think a pre-screen can convey to the school what a live audition can.

Thanks “BethsMom”! I agree, so much more in that live audition. After talking w/D tonite, we are just going to stick w/the on campus audition & not worry about the prescreen. I look forward to hearing about your D’s audition, break a leg! :-)

I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again: I LOVE UArts’ Prescreen policy. I wish all schools did it like UArts. To them the prescreen is OPTIONAL but if you do it and pass it, you have an automatic call back at the live audition. This way of doing it TOTALLY leaves it up to the applicant/family to decide what is best for THEM. Some love prescreens because if they don’t pass it it saves them the cost of the trip; others hate them because they feel they present so much better in person. So here you can totally choose. It’s so sensible and applicant-friendly.

Yes; I agree. I wish some of the schools that don’t participate in the Unifieds for MT had an optional pre-screen. To spend all that money on airfare, it would be nice to know ahead of time if there is any real interest by the school before incurring the cost of airfare and hotel. It can be $1,000 a trip depending on how late the audition is booked. The airfares, as you know, shoot up for last minute flights.
