Received full financial aid at UCSC. Will have to take out 30K in loans from UBC. Am concerned about California budget crisis effecting class availability at UCSC. Any overall thoughts? UBC seems to receive higher academic ratings.

$30k total or $30k/yr?

Either way, UBC is academically better but probably not enough better to justify heavy loans.

UBC is not worth 30K more than UCSC.

I think that, while the CA budget crisis is severe and gets a lot of press, the financial climate is negatively affecting public schools throughout the US and Canada.

UBC is larger than UCSC, academically they’re peers though, some departments are better than other on both sides. I’ve known lots of students who were studying abroad at UCSC from UBC who said just that.

A full scholarship to the University of California is amazing and you shouldn’t toss that. I got the same thing (Regent’s Scholarship) to Santa Cruz, got my BA with barely any debt and went on to an Ivy for my MBA later.
