has anyone else noticed that u of c has increased in popularity among CCers over the past year? why do you think that is? and do you think this trend extends beyond the CC community? it seems as though the overlap between ivy and uchicago applicants are becoming more and more common. is it that applicants think of chicago as a safe but still prestigious bet, with its relatively high acceptance rate and more forgiving criteria when it comes to grades?

It doesn't seem that much more popular...Last year seemed to have a TON more posts.

I don't think more technical posting can be considered an increase in popularity. About three-fifths of the posts in this forum deal strictly with the application process.

But there is a lot of posting in the other forums- "What are my chances", "Search and Selection". I agree that there seems to be a lot of interest lately. People also are actually interested, not just tossing it off as an Ivy fallback position.

i can't believe my writing skills... overlap is of course singular so the verb should be "is." also, the correct word to modify "overlap" is "wider" not "more common." finally, "more forgiving grading standards" should take the place of "more forgiving criteria when it comes to grades." i assure you i don't make such mistakes on english tests, and therefore don't have to make these annoying corrections every time.

i don't think so. It seems a lot less busy than ever before, even though cc is growing at an enormous rate.

i have to agree with celebrian. honestly, many of the posts have nothing to do with uchicago... the word association game is hopping, but i dont know how many of those posts count as expressed interest in uchicago.

during ea/ed time, I played 10 different word games continuously, but that doesn't really count as expressed interest. Yes, they boost posts count, but typing the first word that comes to mind when the previous typer typed "jello" doesn't exactly have anything to do with uc. If you really want to see if expressed interest is growing, look at how many applied.

its not just important how many applied, but how many applied and want to go. most of the kids that were so excited/nervous when ea letters came out aren't here anymore. that points to a decided lack of interest in the school.

well, i based my observation on how many times uchicago appeared on the college lists posted on here. it wasn't scientific or anything.

I was deferred, and I'm still here...I really do want to go, and I've made sure my admissions officer knows it (that is, without writing an explicitly sappy letter--rather, I've simply followed up with a few emails asking questions if they've received some of my supplemental materials while adding that I'm still very interested in attending).

Same here. jpps1.

i hope i see you guys next year then! still you have to admit, a lot of people are interested in chicago as a backup, so any time they spend looking into chicago and hedging their bets doesnt show real interest in the school. :-(

Chicago certainly isn't one of my backup schools. It's very high on my list. April 1 is just so far away... :(

Yeah, it feels like forever.

Well, statistically compared to the old forum it is - on the new forum Chicago ranks 3rd in the "Top Universities" category, compared to 8th I believe on the old forum.

I was accepted early action, I am going and have always planned and wanted to, I'm applying nowhere else. There's no lack of interest in this school, on my part! But frankly, once someone was accepted, even if they planned to attend, why would they hang out on cc, neccessarily? To me, that doesn't indicate disinterest...

Let's do an objective evaluation!

So, let's say that the interest in a school is measured by the number of threads, not by the number of posts. This will ensure that "game" threads and 10-page troll threads don't get unnecessary weight.

Caltech: 116 threads
WashU: 138 threads
Carnegie Mellon: 157 threads
Emory: 164 threads
UC-Berkeley: 203 threads
Duke: 259 threads
UChicago
: 277 threads
MIT: 422 threads
Brown: 495 threads
Stanford: 638 threads
Harvard: 899 threads
UPenn: 998 threads

(schools chosen mostly at random)

I disagree with that. Some schools seem to have a lot of short threads, while others tend to have less, but longer threads. So I disagree with your method

Chicago's an AWESOME school, and you guys rock because you guys like it so much. Best of luck. I was accepted EA, but will not attend (:(). For all those accepted/will be accepted, enjoy the experience...UofC's da bomb!
