It will take a little while, but it looks there are some big and innovative plans to boost the arts at The University.

U. of C. officials characterized the proposed 100,000-square-foot facility as a nerve center for the arts, saying it would allow students and faculty in disciplines from cinema studies to computer animation to study, create, rehearse and perform under one roof.

...Meant to house a 350-seat multipurpose performance hall and three black-box theaters, as well as music practice rooms and a recording studio, the art center would be used primarily by students and faculty, adding to rather than replacing the university's Smart Museum of Art and the university-associated Court Theatre.

University officials envision the arts center and a 900-bed dorm that is scheduled to be completed in 2008 at 61st Street and Ellis Avenue as a hub of student life on the southern end of the campus, much as the new Ratner Athletics Center and a neighboring dorm have created a hub on the campus' north end.

I am a little worried that this new dorm is going up in the middle of nowhere. I believe they are also constructing a new police station on the south end of campus as well.

It's hardly in the middle of nowhere. It is right next to BJ (sharing a cafeteria) and the Law School, where it will also share facilities. It will result in many changes in the immediate neighborhood as well. Moving 900+ folks into one relatively small area is bound to have some unanticipated results as well.

Hopefully it will mean the revitalization of 63rd and Cottage Grove as a place to eat, stay, and listen to jazz. But that is probably a decade or two away.

Or maybe quicker, if the Olympics come to town...

It was really great. I love those west-coasters. I had a lot of funny questions about "those east-coasters." Such as: "Are the people there really cutthroat... like... are there lots of people from the east coast?"

I also had the best cheeseburger of my life at the High Street Cafe in Eugene.

S lives on the south end of campus and loves it. It's not in the middle of nowhere! He can walk from one end of campus to the other in 15 minutes.

My son (a freshman) lives in Burton-Judson and loves it there so far. Most of his classes are in the southern part of the main quadrangle, a five minute walk away at most, right across the Midway. Way closer than a lot of the dormitories located east of the main part of the campus. The bookstore is close too. Not to mention that he doesn't have to walk anywhere to get to the dining hall!
