U. Of Edinburgh Admission Q!

@SillyStokey92,
Did you apply for the FAFSA? Was the loan offered not substantial?
Oh that’s cool! :)

I applied for the loans but, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for me. :slight_smile: However, I had quite limited finances.

@SillyStokey92,
Thank you! :slight_smile:
I have a few more questions…
Did you ever visit St. Andrews? If yes, could you describe your experience and how you felt about the campus?
When do you plan to study abroad?
If you had gotten the financial aid package you wanted, would you have attended?

I did not. I found out about my financial aid package about 2 weeks before I was due to leave to visit; however, my father’s family is from the area originally, so I’ve been to the area before.

I plan to study abroad either the second semester of my sophomore year or the first semester of my junior year. Leaning more towards Sophomore though.

And most definitely. St. Andrews was my first choice of my acceptances :)

Received a conditional offer today at 12 CST from Edinborough.

Successfully complete High School Graduation Diplome.

Achieve AP Biology at 4 or above. Please provide your

previous AP and SAT certificates. This offer is made on the

basis that you are ‘Overseas’ for fee purposes and is valid

only on this basis.

Btw - I keep misspelling Edinburgh everywhere. Corrupted by how they call themselves during presentations.

@texaspg,
I used to always mispronounce it. :P

Hi!
They seem to be pretty quick about these things . . . I sent in my application just over a week ago and got offers for 4 of the 5 programs I applied to today (Nov. 8, 2011). It is rolling decision, so I imagine that they get back to you as quickly as possible.

Hi CuberX!
I think replies are sent sooner for international students.
Where did you apply?

Congrats!

I applied on 19th September. I haven’t heard anything yet. ):

texaspg

Congratulations regarding the offer. The conditions seem reasonable and I am sure you are thrilled! I noticed you had mentioned 8 AP’s have already been completed. Mostly 5;s in those 8 AP;s or was the score lesser? So, does that mean they expect 9 AP’s? any idea, how many 5’s are needed?
What were the SAT 1 /SAT 2 scores like?

Manchester requirements are higher than edinburgh??

BTW, was the course choice “Biology”?

Do you think I have a chance (at edinburgh or st. andrews)?
I have only taken two APs so far (an got a 3 on both :frowning: ) and am taking two more this year (might self-study for one more)
but I have a 2150 SAT (superscored, 680CR, 700M, 770W)
and a 31 ACT composite score…

abscalc - the UK trend seems to be that they are trying to make conditional offers in order to ensure you are still studying or OTOH may be Biomedical sciences/engineering depts think biology and calc BC are important for that field. The 8 APs my kid took were all 4s and 5s needed for national AP scholar ranking.

Edinburgh did ask for an official copy of SAT yesterday when we sent in downloaded copy of SAT but they seemed to accept the copied AP scores.

texaspg

I guess your interpretation is correct. They look at the subjects very clearly - for eg, if your kid is applying for Biology and he had already secured a 5 in AP Biology in Junior year, may be the outcome would have different. Do you also think so?

Does collegeboard send official SAT reports to UK colleges also? Does it happen online or via post? Any idea how long the process takes for your official reports to reach Edinburgh?

Just curious - any academic reasons that your kid is applying to UK as an american applicant? or is the UK choices (for safety measures) over and above his US choices?

abscalc - Edinburgh seems to have basic requirements for admission - one or two APs or one or subject tests (I am just saying that from memory) and a SAT of 1700 or so. They did mention in presentations that the admissions are without conditions for students who are much above that threshold. So it is most likely that they have decided to make a little push for conditionals although may be having a score in biology already might have made a different outcome.

Collegeboard does allow you to send scores to lots of schools outside the country. When we looked at it in the past, we could not find the schools but there is flag that releases the lock for US only listing in the second row when you are looking for schools. This lock allows you to pick any other country and then you can find schools there. I suspect each school has their own way of receiving scores. As to why, I go with why not. The application was mainly for Oxford but it comes with 4 other choices. We don’t qualify for FA in US which means all schools are equal costwise.
Btw - Imperial college responded today requesting an interview on February 1st or taking some kind of written test by email if the applicant can not show up. So they are not deciding anytime soon.

<<they did="" mention="" in="" presentations="" that="" the="" admissions="" are="" without="" conditions="" for="" students="" who="" much="" above="" threshold.="">>>
<<so it="" is="" most="" likely="" that="" they="" have="" decided="" to="" make="" a="" little="" push="" for="" conditionals="">>></so></they>

Can you please explain the above extract in a little more detail.

Guess you are right - I heard elsewhere that someone who got 3 800 in SAT 2 and around 2250 in SAT and atleast 8 AP’s with all 5’s with excellent essays and references still got a conditional from Edinburgh this year.

So, does that mean their threshold is way too high this year?? And probably they are hardly giving out unconditionals this year…

query123 - Oxford and Edinburgh go around the country doing presentations as a team. I attended one last year and one this year. Oxford person says their admissions are conditional without exceptions because they want students to have a goal in their final year of school. From what I remember this year, the Oxford lady said if you are qualified for Oxford at the minimum required level, you should probably get into Edinburgh without conditions.

Suffice it to say my kid’s SAT scores are superior to ones you listed. So I think they are just making them all conditional but I could be totally wrong.

I have an offer now for Social Anthropology. (:

Congratulations 082349. Is that without any conditions?

Thanks. I have to get BBB at the A-levels I’m taking now (literally). I did submit my ACT, SAT and AP scores and was hoping for an unconditional but sadly that didn’t come true.
