I'm currently involved in the brain tormenting process of the dreaded college search. I'm currently preparing to enter my senior year of high school this fall and would like to send out some applications early in order to boost my chances of acceptance to the schools of my choice. Lately however, I've been in the dilemna of choosing between MSU and U of M. While I have to admit I know alot more about MSU than U of M, I would like to know, or get a general feel of my chances of becoming a Wolverine. I'd really appreciate if you guys could give me a hand in letting me know if I should even bother my time with U of M, or keep pushing. Here's a quick overview of my stats:

Sex: Male
Ethnicity: African American
Residency: IL
School Rank: Top 25%
GPA: 3.2
ACT: 31 (With Writing)
Curriculum: (Honors, AP's)
Intended Major: Communications/Journalism

Extracurricular: Drum Major, Band Member (Trombone), Newspaper, Tech Club, Group Interpretation, Drama/Theater Club, Football (Fresh and Soph year), Student Council (Freshman)

Awards: Honor Roll, Leadership Award, SICA All Cast (Group Interpt), SICA Silver Medalist in Trombone Duet (Band), and probably a few more.

Outside of School: Part-Time Job (5hrs/4 days a week) at the Public Library

*So what's my chances guys? I appreaciate your help in advance, thanks!

Your ACT is good and your URM status wil help. However, a 3.2 GPA will hurt you. Does it include your Freshman year? If so, did you do better your Sophomore and Junior years?

Yeah that's everything up through the end of the junior year. My sophmore year was bad, and Junior was average until second semester where I got back on track.

IN! Yes, Umich is very GPA oriented; however I just can't see them rejecting an African American male with a 31(99th percentile for African Americans) if you apply early(september should do it).

Just to be safe though, you should really write good essays and maybe attach a resume that explains why you have had a low GPA in hs. Your honors/AP courses will also definitely help.

In at both. MSU for sure, U of M above 90%. I don't know how admissions will work this year if the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative passes (more likely a when it passes), so that is something to check in to. If that happens, it will be a different story. A kid I know was actually rejected from MSU with identical stats. He's also a forensics all-star and won all kinds of competitions. He eventually got in after appealing the decision.

But why are you bothering with Michigan publics? UIUC is just as good, probably a better deal financially too. But then again, Michigan might toss you some scholarship money, so I guess you should just apply and see what happens.

Good luck, but don't lose any sleep over this. It's possible that Michigan might defer you, but if you can pull a decent 1st semester you will be in awesome shape.
