Hi! I was recently accepted to U of M and State, and I plan on getting my undergrad in neuroscience before going into med school. Which college do you think has the better program and campus life? I hear that the dorms at U of M suck and so does the food?
University of Michigan has better great alumni network, social scene, prestige, and academics than Michigan state.
Better program is Umich in nearly every way. All feasible ranking sources point to this. Also, Umich graduate neuroscience is one of the top programs in the nation and the undergrad program is a feeder into it. As for dorms, it depends what your expectations are. Markley sucks, but East and West Quad are state of the art, as they were renovated in the last few years. Bursley is also being renovated this summer. As for food, UMich is good, but MSU is elite (its like restaurant quality)
U of M pre-med is extremely competitive so think about if you’re going to be able to perform above your peers over there.
At Michigan North Quad is brand new and beautiful. All the Hill dorms are great and recently renovated, but Markley has a cockroach problem and should be avoided!! Best food is at south quad.
There really is no comparison for academics. You can have a good experience at MSU but it is not in the same class as Michigan.
Both schools have lots of parties, and sports are excellent at both schools. Michigan has a much larger percentage of OOS and international students so it has a bit more cosmopolitan flavor. Ann Arbor is a nicer town than East Lansing, but I think the MSU campus is more beautiful.
Your info about dorm and food are wrong. Most of the dorm s have been recentlt renovated. The dining at SQ, MoJo, and Markley are all very good.
There will be strong students in neuroscience at either university. Is one significantly less expensive than the other? BTW, the U of M PhD neuroscience program only has 1 student out of 50 who was a U of M undergrad major in neuroscience, perhaps because PhD students often are encouraged to go to a different program than staying at their undergrad school. I haven’t been there for a while but I used to think that Ann Arbor was a cooler city than East Lansing.
Once Red Berenson, legendary Michigan Hockey coach was recruiting a player that was also being recruited by State. The recruit told him after three months that he couldn’t decide as he couldn’t tell the difference between the schools.
Well, Berenson said “your decision is then made, you’re going to State”. The recruit asked what he meant. Berenson replied “If you can’t tell after 3 months that michigan is not the same as michigan state, you should not come to michigan”.
True story.
I chose UMich over MSU around this same time last year after initially committing to MSU and I can honestly say that I’ve never once regretted my decision.
Go ask state students. What do u thk um ppl will say? Jeez
