U of M supplemental essay help?

Essay: Everyone belongs to many different communities and/or groups defined by (among other things) shared geography, religion, ethnicity, income, cuisine, interest, race, ideology, or intellectual heritage. Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.

I'm thinking about being honest and writing about how I love games (especially Starcraft 2 that came out not long ago). I have 3.98 GPA, have 10 AP's, 33 ACT, do sports, am a vice president of a club, and tons of other extra activities so I should get into U of Michigan if I don't bomb the essays. Sadly, I'm horrible at choosing and writing an essay. My commonapp essay is little better than cr*p. I really need to do good on this (and improve commonapp too). Is liking games a good topic if it actually expresses myself or is it bad because college admission officers will think I'm a game addict, gaming nerd, etc. (or is it just a bad topic overall?) Please don't give an answer like: "if thats who you are go for it :D" unless you actually think that. :P

thanks for looking at this

Alright here goes nothing lol. I’m also applying this year so I don’t have anything to back up what io I’m about to day so please don’t hold me to this. In my OPINION…I feel like its an ok topic, probably not the best, but if you write it effectively…it may get the job done. Why? Well when you are spendingg countless hours reading essays about cliched topics and what not…is nice to have something different. however this doesn’t mean that you can just not put any effort into it and call it good. You have to make your essay sound less childish and more mature while explaining your hobby to someone who may think video games are for kids. So yes you are running a risk, however a risk that may pay off well. That’s just my 2 cents, Galib2011.

thanks for the reply galib, but i dont want to be running a risk for u of m, my parents got divorced when i was one month old so i had to do lots of housework (my dad working out, my sister at college, rest of my family no tin the u.s. and just me at home). they tell you to write down parents and housework you do in commonapp, and of course, i wrote truthfully (i didnt try to make it stand out or anything, i just used pain words to tell a simple fact). knowing that, how about i write an essay about how i like to cook and experiment making new foods? ( i actually do cook a lot in my house and i do experiment)

for the gaming essay, maybe if you related it to the rest of your life, and how it impacted you as a person, it might be better.

To pick, I would write what you feel most emotional about. That emotion tends to come out in writing, making the essay better.

it would make sense if you’re part of some sort of gaming community/group of friends. the focus of the essay should probably be more about that than the actual gaming.
