In terms of academics, how do these two colleges compare? Currently I'm interested in Biology, specifically about plants and animals, but mostly animals. I understand that the University of Michigan is viewed as being more prestigious, but is it better in all ways academically? Out of these two schools, which do you think is better for studies related to animals?

Michigan State is better than UM just like:
Florida State is better than UF.
NC State is better than UNC.
TAMU is better than UT.
CSU’s are better than UC’s.

Seriously ? UMich is way superior to MSU in every major. MSU is for UMich rejects.

Michigan State has arguably the best zoology program in the country. I’m less familiar with its botany program, but I’m under the impression it’s also top-notch. If you qualify, Lymann Briggs is an excellent opportunity and tends to place students into good graduate programs. Having a vet school on campus is a significant advantage for pre-vet students, if that’s something that interests you.

Michigan has chosen to pursue ecology instead, which is fundamentally different from zoology or botany in focus but shares a significant overlap with both, particularly at the undergraduate level. Michigan offers a fair amount of zoology and conservation biology-related courses.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either for organismal biology (or related fields). Michigan generally has stronger departments than MSU, however, so if you’re not entirely sure you want to stick with zoology, that should be something to consider.

In the life sciences in general (be it Medicine, Biology or Bio-Engineering), both Michigan and MSU are very strong, with the edge going to Michigan. However, in all things “animal”, MSU is king. Their agriculture, veterinary and zoology programs are first rate. If you wish to specialize in Animal biology and immerse yourself in the field, I think MSU is the way to go. Michigan has a stronger overall reputation, but in the domain of animal science, MSU really has the edge.

Thanks for answering, some other people’s input was very much needed! Your replies really gave me some things to think about and before I make a choice I see that I’ll really have to see what I’m interested in.
