So I have been having a tough time deciding which college would be a better fit for me: University of Michigan Ann Arbor or Michigan State University.
In general, I seem to prefer UoM for the most part (location, campus, and activities) but I’m also interested in MSU for better fields of study for things such as veterinary sciences and zoology (two fields I may be interested in).
I do not think it’s good to let my college decide my major but it seems to me that that’s what’s happening here.
If I choose UoM, I will most likely go into biology/medicine-related fields (which I don’t dislike, but don’t absolutely love), but I would not know what to do after my undergrad. But, I absolutely love the school in general.
If I choose MSU, I will most likely also go into biology or possibly zoology (which really like), and then veterinary school afterwards. But, I don’t like the school as much as UoM.
The difficult part of this decision is the fact that I’d love to go to UoM, but I wouldn’t have as much “what I am going to do” assurance that I would at MSU.
Most people who want to be vets already know. Are you one of those people?
I think you have a very good handle on both schools. If you are interested in animal sciences, agriculture or physics, go to MSU. For everything else go to Michigan. You should call the vet school admissions office and ask them how many of the current graduates came from MSU. Also consider what would happen if you change your mind about your future path. That’s pretty common too.
which is an admission program to MSU vet school through the MSU honors college. They take up to 10 per year per pathway, out of appx 115 vet school spaces.
For the most part, if costs are similar, it is better to go the better quality in-state school. While MSU might have a pathway for vets, there is also a good chance the OP will change their mind about major in which case they would be better off at UM.
@TooOld4School I’m not fully sure about being a vet yet but it’s an interesting topic. It’s mostly Zoology too. Thanks for the tips though! I’ll look into it some more.
