Hi, I live in MA, and I was thinking of applying EA until I realized I probably can't afford it.

Calculation shows that we will need to pay $25k/yr.

Is it possible at all for OOS students to get more generous aids that are close to a full ride?

University of Michigan does not guarantee to meet the full need for OOS students. There are a very small number of merit awards for OOS students that are highly competitive.

A very few percentage-wise highly desireable OSS students get substantial aid but that is by no means the norm. You can certainly apply EA, you won’t find out your aid until spring so make sure you have affordable choices in hand.

I think that $25K calculation is under what will actually be expected. Is that your FAFSA EFC? Or did that calculation come from UMich’s Net Price Calculator?

It came from Michigan calculation.
$25k is including EFC, loans. Not too bad, but I can go to, say, Rice for only $6000 according to their calculator.

My parents make about $50k a year, and we own pretty much nothing :/

I really wanted to go to U of Michigan, but I guess I will have to wait till next spring to see what the fate says.

I believe Rice meets full need for all accepted students. UMich does NOT meet full need for out of state students.

It reaaaaally stinks because there is no public school as good as UMich in my state.

But why should Michigan taxpayers pay for your school? Your family does not pay taxes in that state.

Go to Rice. It is a good school. Going to UofM Cs Rice for undergrad will not make one bit of difference in your future. You get the same piece of paper from both. What matters is what YOU do with it.

Go to Rice. Many would say that it’s a better school than U of M anyway, and it certainly will get you where you need to go for a job or grad school applications. It sounds like your heart’s set on Michigan; think of Rice as going to U of M Honors, just without the ginormous U of M wrapped around it. Yeah, that includes the football team too, unfortunately…
