U of Michigan LSA vs Engineering Scholarships?

Hello!

I moved from Michigan to Texas my freshman year of high school, and desperately want to go back to Michigan if at all possible. I've already applied to MSU, and these are my stats/ECs:

4.0 UW GPA/4.83 Weighted
11 AP Classes
2310 SAT/1520 (CR + M)
780 Math Level 2 SAT 2
Top 3% of class (extremely competitive school)

ECs (major ones):
Managing Editor of school newspaper
Eagle Scout
Secretary of church quorum
Founder & President of Charitable Creativity Club
Tutor/Piano Teacher (started my own business)
Co-Founder of Modern Linguistics Club
LDS seminary every morning

Anyways, my parents make so much money... but they're not giving me any. Literally nothing. So, I'm kind of screwed unless I get scholarships. I applied to MSU because I think I have an alright chance at scholarships.

I called U of M and they said they won't waive out-of-state tuition costs unless I finished all the way through junior year in high school in a Michigan school... which I haven't! Hahah. But, they said that I should still apply and possibly get scholarships.

I've done some research, and I've seen that there are mostly 3 MAJOR scholarships, including ~15 full rides, ~15 full tution, and many more 20k scholarships in each school. I may be okay with a 20k scholarship (if that's all I get, if I get it), because my dad pays child support. So, I could use that to help with tuition and then pay off loans/get private scholarships.

ANYWAY, to my real question:

Is it more likely to get a scholarship in the LSA school or Engineering school? I calculated the endowment:student body ratio and they're pretty much the same for both schools. It seems like LSA has a lot more scholarships, but can I go to the Engineering school and get an LSA scholarship? I'm so confused.

If there are 30 full ride/tuition scholarships per school, aren't my chances a lot higher at the Engineering school simply because there are less students there?

Do you think I have an alright chance of getting a scholarship to U of M? It's my dream school... I love Michigan more than life.

By the way, I'm considering pre-med (so biology, biochem, psychology, etc.), computer science, software/computer engineering, and chemical engineering.

I may be okay with a 20k scholarship (if that’s all I get, if I get it), because my dad pays child support

Your dad pays $25k or so each year for YOUR support alone?

because my dad pays child support

How long is the order for child support? Often it ends around age 18, but sometimes there is an order thru college.

Ask your mom how long you’ll get child support. And, if you do, ask if you’ll be given all of it while in college. Your mom may say, “no,” that she’ll keep some of it to cover your summer and holidays costs or for some other reason (car insurance, health insurance or whatever).

You may get enough money to go to MSU, but in case you don’t, apply to some schools where you will get enough money FOR SURE.

No, my dad pays ~$900 a month, which comes to a little over 10,800/year until I am 22. And I have people I could stay with if I can’t afford room & board (family and friends live there). He also said he may be able to pitch in a bit if I go to a really good school. The checks for child support come straight to me (they did with my sisters too).

I already applied to Fordham, Northeastern, Georgia Tech, and MSU. I’m planning on finishing U of M tonight, and then UT Austin and USC next weekend.

What schools will your FOR SURE get scholarships of $20k or more?

You have family/friends you can live with if you go to MSU? But, if you go to G’tech, USC, UMich and so forth, you won’t have that, right? So, at those schools you’d need much larger scholarships, right?

What are your financial safety schools? These are the schools that you know FOR SURE that you have the whole COA covered?

Scholarships are very competitive at the Michigan flagships. Neither guarantees to meet need for out of state students and MSU does not meet need for in-state students so yes, you will be at the mercy of merit based scholarships. I was not aware there were any full tuition scholarships at UofM for out of state students, but sometimes Michigan does award several scholarships together. Again they are quite competitive. Your chances of getting your tuition closer to $30,000 a year (if that is your “budget”) are better at MSU than at Michigan so I agree with Mom2 on that point. MSU if $42,500+ for out of state and Michigan is $53,500 for OSS freshman/sophomores.

MSU is FAFSA only, University of Michigan is Profile and FAFSA. For Michigan you will apply to either LSA or the College of Engineering. You can transfer from LSA to Engineering if you plan your schedule. The Shipman which I believe is the largest single scholarship is $12,000 or $20,000 if you live in campus dorms and is not limited by the college you chose. It is an interview scholarship and you must be admitted by early January to qualify. It looks like you would qualify for $3000 - $8000 at Michigan State plus any other scholarships that are available. But none of the scholarships at UofM or MSU look to be “automatic.”

Good luck with all the colleges where you have applied.

Thanks for all the replies!!

I’m applying to OSU, which may not cover the full COA, but it’s an amazing college and is within our means after a few scholarships.

My big question:

It seems like most people who post on here saying that they get the Engineering Scholarship of Honor have gotten near-perfect scores on two SAT II subject tests. Am I at a disadvantage because I only submitted one!?? What do you think?? :(
