“Is anyone on here a NMF? My son was originally given a scholarship for $14,000 but was told when he declares them #1 on NM it would be between $25,000 & $35,000. He was also given some grants. He was also given some grants. Not sure how that may change. Also if he goes there the @nd yr I won’t have 2 in school so I think grants may change. They need say they meet 100% need. Anyone with this situation?”

DS is NMF and considering U of R. He was offered 12K, not sure if it’s a grant or scholarship. My understanding is that the 12K would not be tacked onto the NM money - in other words, he gets the NM money, but the 12K goes away. I could be wrong about this so you might want to contact the school to confirm.

@TheBigChef I am aware that the scholarship $ changes to the NM amount. Where you told a definite amount for NM? I was just given a range. The range is a big difference. I was also told that grant $ will probably be readjusted to a different amount. To be honest my son is deciding on either staying instate at Binghamton (offered their scholars honors program, which is also selective) or U of R. We need to know a more definite $ to help us decide. He does not want big loans.

Lovemycats:
Didn’t hear a definite amount for NMF. I don’t think you will know for sure until the school tells you. The numbers which I did see poking around the internet were between $20-25K, hopefully your numbers are more accurate. Bing and U of R are both great schools, and all things being equal, DS would prefer U of R, but not sure if it’s worth the extra money.

Lovemycats: we called the admission office and were told that NMF is between 25K and 30K a year. The scholarship is renewable so we expect to receive the same amount in each school year. We are also very excited with the research grant my son received. The grant is one-time award of 3K. It opens up the door for a student to start doing undergraduate research early.

@TopBull888 that is great. What is your major.? My sons is computer science. TheScholars program at Binghamton also offers a stipend for either summer internship, research, or study aboard which is a nice peak sine they dont offer any scholarships for instate.

@TheBigChef that is how my son feels. He onset want the loans & wants to save it for grad school. Even if he took out the basic loan to start with & the increase each year he will end up needing $30- $40K which is $ that can go to grad school.

@lovemycats: my son’s major is computer science. The CS department is strong in AI computer vision area. We checked out their research publications in AI and the ranking is quite high. One of their professors was my TA in digital image processing course so I know his research very well. My son will learn a lot there. Few months ago I hosted a delegation of UR CS and STEM students to visit Silicon Valley and talked with them. They are all very smart kids. Your son will have very academic and supporting environment at UR. Go Meliora!

Has anyone else still not received a decision? Is there another wave or should I call?

Hey guys! since today was one of the 2023 experience days on campus, I thought of coming here and shortly introducing myself, I am a sophomore at UofR doing computer Science as an international student from egypt, and just thought of stopping by here if you guys have any questions regarding UofR , housing and classes in general. I love helping out new students and prospective students in general. so feel free to message me!

Hi Meshmesha,
I have been admitted to URochester, but I was wondering if they meet demonstrated aid. What are the financing options, how much debt do students gather?
As you can see, I am mostly concerned about aid/student debt

Thanks for the help!

@Puzzeled101 . Not sure if UR is need blind. Seems like it may be need-aware. Also, Even if a college offers need-blind admissions and meets the full demonstrated financial need, a student might have loans as part of the financial aid package. Best is to contact their FA.

I am pretty sure UR is need-blind when it comes to admissions, because I have been accepted. LOL. I am still waiting for FA, so i was wondering if any current students at the school can discuss how UR is with aid. I have contacted a FA officer, and they are in the process of review.

@Puzzeled101 My daughter received her financial award letter yesterday. She was admitted on 3/25/19. We made plans to visit the school on April 19, 2019, but that changed after she received her financial award letter. She received $13,000 in a Dean’s Scholarship and a loan. She was looking forward to attending this school, but paying over $60,000 was over our budget. I hope you have a better outcome.

You mean 60K per year, and 240k for all four years? If its that, then yes that is way overbudget. Or is it 15k per year. i would love if you tell me her net cost, so I can have some idea. Thank you so much for the reply. If financial aid is over-budget, Rochester is out of my list. I don’t want to be in debt.

@Puzzeled101 Her net costs per year is $62,962. She got accepted to UCLA and UC Berkeley, but she preferred to go to a smaller school such as University of Rochester. They only offered her a Federal Direct Subsidized Loan for $3,500 in addition to the Dean’s scholarship.

Although I am waiting for my FA, I can already tell this is not going to become an option. How much were her costs from UCLA and Berkeley?

@Puzzeled101 Her costs at UC Berkeley is $36,522 living on campus. She received about $8,300 in scholarship and the rest is funded by work study and school loans. This is more affordable than any private school, but I prefer the small student population at University of Rochester. She’s still waiting for UCLA financial award letter. Since we live in California, the financial aid will probably be similar with all the other UC’s she got accepted to.
