U of Rochester vs. UB

so i'm pretty sure which i'm going to choose but i just want to get someone else's opinion. i want to major in biochemistry and eventually go to medical school. i received a full scholarship (tuition, room/board, even books) at the university at buffalo (suny school). there i would also be in the honors program which has a lot of benefits. i've also been accepted at rochester for biochem, but here i would have to pay about 15K each year plus 5500 in loans each year...ammounting in about 80K after 4 years. while rochester definitely has the better program, i feel i could probably excel better at buffalo and it would be a tad easier than rochester which would look better for med school (better GPA). so...which one??

ladaloop-
Just my opinion, but I have to agree with you.

Private school prestige is great, as well as the reputation of UR, but I don’t think it is worth the cost to you. UB will not hold you back from attending med school or any other graduate program. I believe the MCATS will play a big part as well as GPA. I stick by my “you can go anywhere and be anything” thoughts.

When looking at tuition on the UB website, I was amazed at the low cost of medical and law school as well as other grad school costs. Who knows, you may end up there for med school and come out with little in way of loans altogether. Med school at private schools is very expensive in students graduate with lots of debt. Save your money for med school. Should you decide on other forms of grad school, you may get full tuition waiver anyway in many of the sciences.

(By the way, my son took a full tuition scholarship, his choice, over full price at Berkeley, and is doing fine. It will not impede getting into grad school and we will have the money to pay for it.)

Good luck.

agree with the two of you-- U of R is extremely prestigious and an AWESOME school but it def is an unbelievable offer that UB is offering you. personally i’d go to UB to bank some cash but you can’t go wrong with either of the schools (they are both great)

Go to U of R. You will regret if you just wonna say that amount of money. It will perfectly prepare you for the med school education.
