My daughter is a junior in HS and we are visiting USC and UNCSA in a couple of weeks. She is interested in a strong modern program but wants to stay close to home in NC for at least the 1st year or so. She takes from a conservatory now and is very strong in modern technique. Can anyone please give us some feedback on these 2 college and any others in the South that we should look at. Thanks!

There are also North Carolina dance departments at ECU, UNC Greensboro, UNC Charlotte, App State, Elon, and Duke.

We visited USC and the program appears to be more ballet focused. UNCSA is not on our list since is does not have much to offer other then the arts and my son is looking a school where he can dance and major in science. We are visiting ECU over spring break.

USC is very ballet-focused, but students choose between 3 majors: ballet performance & choreography, contemporary performance & choreography, and dance education. The contemporary and education programs are smaller, but growing.

I concur, D was in the USC dance program for one semester and it is very ballet focused, but has a fabulous faculty for modern as well. When visiting other schools, she did take a class at Elon, but felt that their program was not a good match for her as she had been used to high intensity training with a professional ballet company school. Don’t have direct experience with these other programs, however we’ve heard the Duke program is very good.
