Ballet and Contemporary dance performance options.

Our daughter sent in her application for fall 2009, for the senior year of high school. She applied to the contemporary program.Would love to hear comments from anyone who has gone to North Carolina School of the Arts for dance, or from parents. We live in the Northeast, so it is a long way away! Doing high school and commuting one hour each way to dance class is getting too hard...and finding good classes is also getting harder...so NCSA is a possibly wonderful thing for her, if she should get in...Thanks!

My daughter is there now as a senior in high school in the contemporary dance program. She is having a blast and loves the dance classes. I highly recommend the school. If you would like some more info, just pm me.

Thank you! I will pm you. We are eager to hear, and glad that your daughter is so happy!

Hi CShep30!! Your PM box is full so I am posting ?'s here:

Glad to hear your D is happy at NCSA. I have a couple of questions.

Are you an NC resident? If not, how is the aid for out of state students?

Also, is your D contemporary or ballet? My D would be a ballet student. Is there opportunity to also do some vocal and acting if you are a dance student?

Someone on another board told me that if you are auditioning for the Chatauqua Institute SI then you are automatically considered for the NCSA year round program. Do you know if that is the case?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

She is in the contemporary program. We are NC residents, so I am not sure of the aid for out of state students.
Every year after 1st trimester they have 'intensive arts' which means it is all arts, no academic classes. This lasts for 2 weeks...when they get back from thanksgiving to Dec 13 when they get out for xmas break. During this time dance students can be placed in musical theater. My D was placed in karate...2 hours 40 minutes a day! But she actually is loving it. So other than that I am not sure how much voice and acting the dance students will get. My D takes 15 dance classes a week including pilates and then there are her academics, so there is not much time left for anything else.
I am not familiar with the Chautaqua/NCSA connection. If you have any other questions you can PM me..it's not full now! :)

Mom of 3 Stars, The Chatauqua SI is affiliated with North Carolina Dance Theater (in Charlotte) rather than NCSA.
