U of T vs. McGill Life Sci

Hi everyone! I have just been admitted to the University of Toronto’s trinity college for life sciences and McGill University for the same subject.

I plan to go to grad school in the U.S after (probably a PhD in biochemistry). I was wondering which school choice would be best if I plan to go to a pretty good grad school after undergrad in Canada. Pretty much I would like to know if U of T has any name recognition in the U.S like McGill does, and which school has the least grade deflation.

Lastly, I would really love to go to a school with a social atmosphere so I can have a nice balance between school work and some social life. I’ve heard from other forums that U of T in general is pretty antisocial and everyone’s depressed, and trinity college is filled with snobs. Is this true?

Thanks!

U of T would certainly have a very good to excellent rep amongst academics anywhere in the world, depending on the faculty.

Hard to say how you will find it socially. Are you a big city person? Gregarious? U of T is smack dab in the middle of a huge, bustling city with tons of things to do. Do you have trouble turning around and striking up a conversation with a classmate? If you are more of a small town person you might find it overwhelming. If you are from Hong Kong or NYC you might find it quaint.
The problem with either McGill or U of T for most people is handling the study grind. Social life is something that happens when you aren’t studying, going to class, or catching up on sleep.
