Hi All,

My son got the interview invitation (Feb/3 or Feb/7) by email Jan/5 and would like ask the following questions

1) What is the recommended airport if he will fight from California?

2) Is it better to rent the car or take the taxi/shuttle?

3) Any tips for the BS/MD (BioEng Dept.) Program interview?

4) Any other suggestions/recommendations/advices?

Thanks!

1) You fly to Toledo or Detroit.
2) You better have a car in Toledo, unless planning to stay with student host. Public transportation is not widely available in Toledo.
4) It is much colder in Toledo than in California and you need some experience driving in snow (if renting car). Make sure to have warm coat, hat, gloves…

inguye02 what were your son’s stats?

ilovelost,

My son’s stats are following:

SAT1=2250
ACT=35
SAT2: Math = 800, Chemistry = 800, Bio = 740, Physics = 740
GPA=4.32 (Unweighted)
ECs

how did your son get an interview? they sent an email saying interview notifications would only be sent out first week of feb.

ilovelost,

1) Jan/5/11: My son received the email from James F. Kleshinski, M.D. (Associate Dean for Admissions) for the interview invitation.

2) Jan/9/11: He received the letter from James F. Kleshinski, M.D. (Associate Dean for Admissions) for the interview invitation, along with the hotel list and Health Science Campus Map.

3) Jan/10/11: He received the letter from Bioeng Dept: a) Ms. Wiona Porath (Academic Prog Coordinator) and Scott Mlitor, Ph.D. (Undergrad Director)

4) According to Ms. Porath’s email to my son on Jan/11/11

“Once the medical school receives the initial pool of candidates from the bioengineering department, we wait until they tell us who is being interviewed and who has been selected.”

So my son contacted Medical School personel for the interview schedule and interview agenda on either Feb/3 or Feb/7.
I recommend you call/email Ms. Wiona in Bioeng dept first to find out.

Good Luck!

My S and I toured Toledo Bio-Med dept. over a year ago and met with Dr. Miltor and Ms. Porath to gather more info on their BS/MD program. They were very friendly. Ms. Porath arranged a tour of their facilities. Back then the Bio-Med dept was expanding, and was in the phase of building brand new laboratory facilities; we came away quite impressed with the amount of effort in new construction and equipment.

UT seemed to have fairly new dorms, and their Cafeteria had a fairly wide selection!

I gathered that they (Medical college Admins) want to matriculate students into BS/MD program who:

(i) are truly interested in practicing medicine & have displayed evidence thereof, &
(ii) are really interested in enrolling into their MD program. (Have to show extra enthusiasm, lest they feel that a Californian is not likely to enroll!)

Please note that the admission to MD portion is binding, meaning that if your S were to apply other MD programs while enrolled at UT, he will forfeit the guaranteed admission.

BTW, although we did not investigate in detail the level of difficulty in gaining in-state status (from a financial perspective) for the MD portion, I came away feeling that they have a very few OOS students who were in the process of gaining in-state.

Too bad my S did not like the binding aspect of the admission, and, therefore, did not apply.

The odds from being selected out of 74 or so applicants (this cycle) seem fairly favorable. Good luck to your S.

Trinity7,

Thank you for your info!

1) Which schools did your son get the interview?

2) Which school does he attend now?

3) Are you in-state or out-of-state of OH?

He is currently a senior in HS and is applying (& applied) to 5 BS/MD programs. He is now in a waiting mode to see when he might be lucky to get an interview call.

Yes, he is OoS for OH.

Trinity7,

Good Luck to your son!!!

^^ Thanks. Do share the good news in due course of time.

Also good luck to those applying to Toledo.

Trinity,
I am on your S’s side with his “S did not like the binding aspect of the admission, and, therefore, did not apply.” He is right! My D. is finishing in a different bs/md that allow to apply out. Most people do not apply out anyway. However, my D. did with great success. It is good to have freedom to apply to other places, however, it does help a lot to go thru process while having spot before most other applicants. On the other hand, programs that allow applying out most likely require some MCAT score although it is on a low side.

MiamiDAP: Glad to know that your D was accepted to a better med school than the guaranteed one.

I agree that freedom to apply to other med schools without jeopardizing the (guaranteed) admission is positive. However, the Bac/MD programs that my S has applied are very difficult (except one), with very low probability of gaining admission. Those were his choices and he feels very comfortable with his selection. I would have preferred that he had applied to a few more 'easier" ones (as if there are any!); only time will tell.

MiamiDAP,

What medical school is your daughter attending now? (U of Cincinnati or other school?)

^My D. is still deciding which one she will attend next year. She has been accepted to 3 in addition to the one in her program. She likes all 3 of them (2 private in top 20 and one few spots below). She is planning on second visits before she makes decision.

I’m a freshman now in college, and I applied and was accepted into the UT BS/MD program (in Bioengineering). I remember the interviews very cleary, one of them lasted over an hour. But, I didn’t really like the college so much so I declined their offer and now am a BS/MD student in my hometown. Good luck to those of you have an interview.

which one are you in mhs?
