U of toronto anyone??

Hey I was just curious to know, how many of you 'll have been accepted/applied to the University of Toronto , wondering why arent there many threads on the U of T ?given the fact that it ranks pretty high in all rankings( Times, US news, QS et all)

also could you'll please post ur stats- so that i can have a vague idea of how tough is it to get into the univ.
do they require you to send SAT scores for the engineering prgrm? whats the avg score required?Do they consider CBSE scores??

Can somebody give me the pros and cons of attending the U of T as an Indian?

thnx!

^I was accepted to the University of Toronto this season, but eventually turned it down for Brown University. Very frankly, I don’t seem to have any idea as to why there aren’t many UT threads.

A good CBSE percentage, about 85% or thereabouts, in standard twelfth should put you in the competitive pool for UT. But, to be a rivalrous applicant, you must aim for 90% and higher!

SAT Scores are not compulsory for application to UT, although TOEFL, as far as I know, should be given as a proof to the command of the English language.

I turned down UT’s offer primarily because they have very large classes and they lack the flexibility that Brown is so known for. Because UT did not click for me, it does not mean that it will not click for you!

One last think: Please weigh the pros and cons of a university depending on what you desire of it, and not someone else!

Hope this helps!

UfT isn’t as good as top US schools, but it is one of the best in Canada

source: where I live

^ I agree. Plus, I think Toronto is a cool place with very good and safe public transportation system. I have visited Toronto couple of times and that is the impression I got.

ViggyRam, what do you think about the city?

c’mon, there has to be some reason as to why it ranks better than many US schools,
only schools like Berkeley, MIT and Stanford (in the US) that rank better than the U of T.

Can somebody pls list the pros and cons?
would be highly obliged

thnx!

A lot of subjective and objective criteria goes into rankings. You must check out the ranking methodology to get a better idea and sense of the system. Also, most rankings comprise of three different levels - undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate! Hence, a place which is amazing for graduate studies might not be so good at the undergraduate level.

Once again, I ask you to introspect and ask yourself what you want of a college education. This is the best way to asses the pros and cons of any education institution!

Here is what I think:

PROS:
-gets the most money in Canada
-good professors and they get some awesome guest speakers
-if you have never been to Canada before and are from India (or you simply like to be with Indians/Asians) UfT is great because there are a lot of South Asians and Asians so it’ll be easy to make friends and fit in
-Toronto is very very diverse…you will find Indian restaurants everywhere, buffets, etc.
-prestige in Canada and the world
-you will might (or might not) tear up UfT with an awesome GPA (HERE’S THE KICKER: UfT is notorious for their bell curves…you can easily get screwed of a great GPA…BUT if you are a top student you WILL ride the bell curve to A’s in every class…top students get the most out of UfT but it’s risky is you really care about GPA…MED SCHOOL LOL)
-awesome research university with opportunity everywhere
-you can always find ways to have fun (CN Tower, sporting events, clubs, downtown to just walk around, restaurants, etc.)

CONS:
-rankings COMBINE all the endowment for each individual campus + the research done there, etc. etc. so in the end UfT ranks really high (but as a student, you’d be at one campus, not all of them)
-dominated by Asians (some campuses more than others)
-Toronto is really overpopulated in some places, but not to the extent of overpopulated Indian cities
-risk of bad GPA
-huge class sizes
-UfT is run like a business at times…accept a huge bunch of kids, take their money after the flunk out (this won’t be a problem for all of you of course, Indian curriculum OWNS our Canadian one)

Personally, as a premed when I apply, I am going to avoid UfT at all costs. Also, I feel it is too Asian dominated. BUT, if I were not to go to med school, I would definitely consider UfT…not for academics or anything like that really, but for the prestige (yea, I know…REALLY bad way to make a choice). The UfT prestige MAY help to get into top US grad schools.

BUT, if you are an international planning on applying to Canadian schools, McGill, UfT should be atop your list because a lot of Canadian schools aren’t worth the high tuition for internationals if you can get into a US school like Michigan (more prestige in the US=more opportunity). I mean, if your coming all the way to Canada for a school, consider the top ones like the two I mentioned and UBC and Queen’s, etc.

EDIT: for the OP, yea, consider UfT FOR SURE, if you are going into engineering. Which type can I ask? Waterloo is the BEST for computer science/comp. engineering, while UfT has the prestige and is solid for others. For engineering, Waterloo or UfT should be the 2 you choose from. Why? Most prestige, solid programs. I mean, if you don’t care about prestige any uni. will do in Canada, but I assume you want some prestige.

Oh, and btw, Canadians are the nicest people in the world lol. I don’t care how biased that is, but if you come to Canada everyone is welcoming and nice. And, be sure to buy Toronto Maple Leafs apparel when you get here lol. Canadians love their hockey!

thanks for all the replies guys. Esp viggy hey can i add you on fb.could you send me a message with ur email id.i am accessing the site on my mobile so its really slow

^I sent you a PM.

Since applications open in september october i was wondering what should be a decent %age for UofT and mcgill…
IELTS 8
My 11th i finished 4th in school with 4A1s and a B1in english… 10th too got 4A1s and a B1 in english… What percentage should i be aiming at?

You have grades… But anyway, McGill would probably need upper 80s, lower 90s, while UofT would be maybe 5% lower than that. Keep in mind Canadian universities emphasize academics more than ECs, so they’re very important.

^yes, I can confirm that. In Canada, at least as a Canadian applying to Canadian universities, academic ‘stats’ are way more important than ECs, etc. I could honestly just write a terrible essay or something, but since my average in school is high I would be shocked if I didn’t get into UfT (hypothetically speaking).

However, I am a domestic student. For internationals it may be different, but I can’t see it being a lot different at all.

hmmm… yea i do have loads of community service and work experience (yes here we do have some firms willing to employ schoolkids for pay to train them) and Ive played a few rock concerts but have a certificate for only one… That time i didnt care for certificates but only now have I started to care… all other hotels and venues said that i was too late in asking them etc… Plus I also have an adobe certification… However i gave my SAT… well not good… I dont know I guess I got nervous… Now should i submit them or ignore the score… My reading for horrendous… Ugh.

I mean should i submit or ignore it… means what ive heard is that for non-americans SAT is not required… Now what do i do with them?

I don’t think SAT is required for UfT, but don’t quote me on that. I am pretty sure they are not required. If you already sent the scores to UfT, I don’t know how you can cancel them, but if your score is decent or above average for an applicant then if can only help you out. If the scores are bad then it might be wise to cancel (if they are not required)

yea most canadian univs dont require it for international students… But some like Mcgill need it for american applicants… But I just wanted to know that will I loose an edge because of my low SATs even though they arent required? My application is due in sept-oct so i have lots of time to decide whether to submit them or not… However, I cant write it again… And one more thing, any idea what maybe the english cutoff outtof 100 for CBSE students in the top canadian universities??

^sorry, can’t answer the last question. I have no idea. Usually, kids here that get into UfT engineering have overall averages of low 90s. Here are concrete stats for the admitted class of 2014:

Engineering Average
Percent who received an entering average of 95%+ 13.2%
Percent who received an entering average between 90% and 94% 40.1%
Percent who received an entering average between 85% and 89% 30.6%
Percent who received an entering average between 80% and 84% 15.1%
Percent who received an entering average between 75% and 79% 1.0%
Percent who received an entering average between 70% and 74% 0.0%
Percent who received an entering average below 70% 0.0%
Overall Average 89.9%

You can google “CUDO” and look up specific Canadian schools and what the entering class averages were (of course, these are for the Canadian students that were admitted).

How did you get these stats?

Are there a list of similar stats for american universities?

^Well, there are more general stats in the US if you google like “% in Top 10% of class” and “% with GPA over 3.75”, etc. That info. is really comprehensive that I posted.

And to find the same stats for all Ontario universities (the province that UfT, McMaster, Queen’s, York, Western, etc. are in) follow the instructions at the bottom of post 17 (my last post).

You google CUDO…then go under a school, then go under admissions, scroll down.

yeah well im in commerce stream CBSE… and wait are these the avs for the marks submitted in the application or the class12 board marks??
