I applied to U pacific (california) as an international, from Canada. The school is my safety, other than my safeties in Canada. I just recieved an email from them saying that they would scrap my financial aid application, because I'm from Canada, and BEFORE reviewing my application for admission, they wanted a certified bank letter stating we had 50 grand in an account. Its just ****ing me off, and I needed to vent. My stats, compared to this school's, are way above average and the rest of my application is as well. I was counting on a merit scholarship, but they don't tell you whether you received any until you are admitted, of course.
I don't have 50 000 in any bank account - If I did end up coming, it would be if I received a merit scholarship, and I'd borrow the money and my father would sell some of his stocks to help pay. However, right now is an awful time to sell our portfolio and to borrow money. This is something I'm not prepared to deal with for a school I have a 1% chance of going to, and I'm not even admitted yet! Why can't they ask this AFTER admission decision? Why does this ONE school do this.

I think they may have given admission decisions. I was admitted to the Pharm program early (December) and have already done my school interview for a merit scholarship (Powell). But, even though you are an international, I don't know why they would request for a bank statement for 50k in a bank account even before they send out financial aid. You might even not have to pay 50k.

I think this is a ridiculous request though. Their financial aid policies are kinda crappy (To get the Powell, which is only 5000 more than the original scholarship offer, I HAVE to stay 2 years longer as an undergrad than I intended to...my question is why they want me to apply and INTERVIEW only to tell me I have to choose either my pharm program or spend $100k more for an extra 5k per year? Utter nonsense.) and my stats are way above UOPs too.

They told me that they had a lot more applicants this year and that decisions would go out in a month - but I won't get any decision until I give them this bank statement. No banker is going to sign me such a certification without seeing at least 100K in funds. And who has that kind of money cash in the bank?!
I'm rather aggravated. I also didn't know I couldn't get any need-based aid from them until now, but I can get a merit scholarship.
I emailed them to complain nicely and ask for a way to work around this but I'm not confident at all.
I'm so sick of money already - and I'm just 16. Brown & Stanford aren't need blind to Canadian applicants, and they're my two top choices. I'm so screwed. I mean, unless I get into HPY or Dartmouth, I wasted all my time on these apps. It was such a huge time commitment.

Right now I'm thinking I'll have to withdraw my app to UPacific - and all those SAT score transmission, Aid profile + Idoc fees will have gone to waste as well.

Its a tough lesson to learn at my age, that merit alone won't get you education. We are prepared to pay the largest portion possible of tuition and rez fees, but 50 grand?

Hopefully they'll respond to you. UOP might not be rational, but their admissions staff is pretty dedicated to moving around obstacles I think -- well, maybe that's cuz I'm a Powell scholar candidate and a high merit person (as I imagine you are too) and they threat those people better. But since you have high stats too, I think they'll at least attempt to work around this or give you a reason as to why they desperately need this measure.

Stanford and Brown are my top two schools too btw. I find it eerily similar that we applied to these three schools, have the same top two schools, and are extremely disappointed with UOP's financial policies. After finding out about the Powell / Pharm conflict, my chances of going to this school have dipped even more.

Those really are startling coincidences ! I am visiting Brown overnight on Monday - hopefully I won't fall too in love with the school and get depressed come April. I'm going to give UoP the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best come their response, next week I assume. Though don't they send emails at the strangest times? I've had some at 1 am on Saturdays !

lucky! I don't even know what Brown looks like...I'm just hoping I get in and then have an excuse to visit it come April during one of the admit weekends?

I live in California. And UoP never sends me an email D: scary isn't it. It's all been through mail for me haha.

Urgh, they absolutely want the certificate.
And there was a crazy storm on the east coast and I had to cancel my Brown visit...perhaps postpone, but then again, there's an admit weekend in April if I am lucky enough to be admitted .
