U Scranton?

I'm really considering this school. Anyone graduate or currently go there? Any comments on the school would be great :)

Check out the University of Scranton thread. (It is listed under “colleges and Universities” under alphabetical listings.)

My daughter just finished her freshman year there and loves it. ;)

Poster momma-three had a daughter there and can give you some information.

I have two kids who have gone there, the last one is graduating Sunday. They both loved it. They had very different needs and wants in a college yet Scranton fulfilled those requirements for both of them.

The campus has a number of new buildings including a student center that opened in Jan. of 2008 and a soph. dorm that opened for fall semester of 2009. There is a new science complex and upperclass housing currently under construction and scheduled to be completed for fall of 2011.

The students with whom we have interacted over the years are bright, friendly, caring people. Whenever we have visited campus, students will hold doors for you and are generally polite. Faculty we have met have also been wonderful, caring and many go the extra mile for their students. We had the pleasure of meeting many professors of both of the kids at different functions - open houses, honor society inductions, graduation of the older child, and other events we have attended on campus.

After having a relationship with Scranton for the last nine years, I know I will be very sad this weekend when we have to move the last one out of his house. It was a great place for both of them.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Congrats! Well I am interested in the pre-med track. Have either of your children majored in science? If so, how do you think Scranton’s program compares to others.

I love the campus too!

I think it depends on what you are looking for in a school. My niece was not happy at Scranton and transferred after her freshman year. She found there was a lack of activities happening on campus, and not much to do in Scranton. She did make some good friends at Scranton, and keeps in touch, but seems happier now that she in a bigger school in a city.

Scranton’s sciences are strong. My first one’s intended major was chemistry, so that is one area on which we were focused. Both kids had close friends who were biochem majors intending to go to med school. One actually did not get into med school, because although she was very bright (a Presidential scholar) she didn’t give it everything she had during undergrad. She did not do many EC’s or volunteer at one of the three local hospitals, so her resume was light in those areas. She ended up pursuing a different field. But the science track those kids take is very rigorous and the students seem to be well prepared. They have a solid premed advising program as well. You should definitely speak to someone there to answer specific questions about premed.

Thank you all so much for your insight. Especially kitty56, this makes me even more excited to apply to U Scranton :)

I have a friend who is a professor there. He has studied and taught at a wide variety of colleges, and he speaks very highly of the U of Scranton.

One of my biggest fears is having a huge debt to pay off. Is Scranton generous with aid? I heard they give out scholarships in many cases.

The sciences are very good at Scranton. D is a nursing major and just finished year-long courses in chemistry and biology. Both classes were challenging and informative.

As far as a lack of things to do, my D found quite the opposite to be true. She always had things to do! In fact, she commented on how quickly the first year went by because of how busy she was. The school is always offering activities (on-campus & off.) I do not understand how some kids think there is nothing to do there! She can’t wait to go back in the fall.

The merit money was very good for her at Scranton compared to other options. I think you should check out the scholarship information on their website.
