UA scholarship refund?

Hello!

So I was pondering about COA at UA and the engineering scholarship I received ($2,500/yr). If hypothetically I do not buy a meal plan past freshman year when I go off-campus and I use my engineering scholarship for fees (~$800-$850) and dining dollars (~$650), do I receive a refund for the remaining $1,000??? I get that means reporting as income but does UA allow scholarship refunds? It would suck not getting the full bang for the buck for scholarships if I have to use it only at UA…I want to avoid buying another overpriced meal plan if possible. Thanks!!!

Yes, you would receive the difference back either via direct deposit or via a check.

It will be refunded to you, but what you report as income isn’t related to whether it’s refunded or not. You will have to report as unearned income the amount of the scholarship in excess of qualified educational expenses. See IRS publication 970. Course fees will be a qualified expense, but Dining Dollars won’t.

Perfect! Thank you @Class2012Mom and @“beth’s mom”
