I have been accepted into both RIT and UBC. I am unsure which one to take. This is because although RIT’s program is well known, I am not sure if it is as good as the UBC’s program. Also I feel UBC is more well known worldwide and this will help for graduate programs and also job opportunities. RIT’s program is ranked 10th in the world for film, whereas directors in Canada come to UBC to give internships. I have already been accepted in the FILM/TV program in RIT, but I will have to apply for Film production in my second year at UBC. I am really stuck, if you could advise me it would be great!

I’m being biased…but id go with UBC. Vancouver is the home to large film studios, and has been called Hollywood North along with Toronto. Its definitely a place I’d want to be around if I was interested in film, and the internships are something that show great importance in this field. Its always good to look in the long run though, if you feel you could get in your second year, with this amount of thought I think you could, especially if you already got in to UBC. Good luck :)

Thank you so much for your help. Another point I thought was good was that I can try different subjects in the first year, whereas in RIT I will have to do film production. This will give me the opportunity to explore as well.

But thanks so much for your help :)

Can I ask where you decided to go and why? I found your post because I have a son in HS that is interested in film and we were looking at RIT. Also, If you are from the US does it make a differsnce with your degree if you study in Canada?
Thanks in advance.

vryproudmom, I wish someone would respond to you as that is a very good question. I also have a HS age son who wants film production, possibly directing, and he is coming up with some very strange schools. We live within an hour of RIT and his sister just graduated from there, but I have not had luck getting him to look at the school!

Dlbarber I was wondering if your son has found any good options to explore for film? What year of HS is your son. My son has decided thus far to pursue a career in Computer Science but I would like to find a school that is good for both majors. My son is a junior this year.

Maybe we can get this thread restarted…

My daughter has been accepted to UBC as well as Columbia College Chicago and Uinversity of Wisconson Milwaukee. She wants to also go into film production.

Any thoughts on the three schools? UBC seems like the broad education plus a deep dive in film; columbia college would give her the deep experience in folm but not so much across the broad side and I dont know much about UWM.

thoughts of those in the various programs are appreciated…

take care
