I’m an international student who plans to major in Computer Science and I have been accepted to both UBC and UofT. I was wondering which one of these would be a better choice taking in account academics, campus, location, social life, cost, etc…
I have several friends in UBC and I know from them that the UBC campus is gorgeous but I’m really not familiar with the UofT St. George campus. I have heard that the academic reputation of UofT is better but I don’t know the accuracy of this information when it comes to computer science. I have also heard that Vancouver is a pretty cool place and that the social life in UBC is great, but again I am completely uninformed when it comes to UofT.
Please enlighten me.
U of T also has a gorgeous campus. Academics are rigorous. Toronto is a larger city than Vancouver and the St George campus is in the heart of it. Social life is great as well if you live on campus. Costs will be similar. Vancouver is a more expensive city to live in as a rule. The reputation for U of T computer science is better than that of UBC. U of T generally ranks about 20th in the world. UBC generally ranks about 40th.
Computer science at U of T is competitive. Students are not admitted to the specialist program when they are admitted to U of T. They must apply at the end of their first or second year (if they don’t get in after first year). If you don’t get into the specialist program, you can do a double major with computer science and something else. Either a specialist program or a double major is required to graduate - you cannot do a single major.
