bump, any more opinions? This is helping so much so far

UBC for sure…lots more curling there.

noawesome, those are awesome pictures

UBC is not at all suitcase school. Only 36% of students at UT live on campus.

There is more to being a suitcase school than simply the number of students in on-campus dorms.

Isn’t UT Austin also supposed to be a commuter school ?

UT-Austin is NOT by any means a commuter school. People live off campus, but usually in apartments right outside of the school. You will be able to develop great bonds and life-time friends at UT-Austin.
UT-Austin’s has top notch professors. It’s top ranked in all the grad programs, and the same professors teach the UG programs.

Both schools are great schools, I’ll echo the recommendation to visit both.

I haven’t spent much time in Texas, but I hear a lot of good things about UT Austin.

UBC is about 90 minutes away from my home. I haven’t visited Vancouver in a long time, but just recently spent the day a few miles east of the city. I personally really like British Columbia except for the fact that Canada can be a lot more expensive than the US and the fact that one is continuously subject to the mercy of the exchange rate. I hear that UBC is a great school, but have also heard about the commuter/suitcase aspect of the school. As you may know, one main attraction for US students to Canada is the lower drinking age (19 in BC), but that’s kinda beside the point.

Personally, I would probably choose UT-Austin and study abroad at UBC. Sure Canada isn’t that far away from the US, but it is a different country with its own culture.

Concerning the subtopic of this thread, British Columbia is a beautiful province, hence the license plates that say “Beautiful BC” and “The Best Place on Earth.” If you like skiing, Whistler is one of the top ski resorts in the world and is a popular daytrip from Vancouver.

Thanks SEA_tide, the reports I keep hearing about UBC being suitcase school are disconcerting and that may be enough to make me choose UT. Even on the UBC website whenever they show pictures of the classroom it seems like a large percentage of the students are adults. That is not the college experience I am looking for, especially since UT has such a thriving social scene…

I’m still gonna visit UBC just in case but this thread has me leaning toward UTexas

thanks again everyone

onthefly, I assure you, 99% of the students in undergrad are straight from HS. You’ll just have to visit to see, and talk to the students themselves. Most of the posters on CC are American teenagers, they really only know American schools, and based their opinion on extremely little information. It simply is not useful information and is a dumb way to choose a school. Which is why you have to visit.

And by the way, UBC is a 3.5 hour drive from Seattle, not 90 minutes.
