hey brassmonkey..i totally agree with you on the fact that the uc admissions system is screwed up. ya they post stuff on their site like they don't discriminate and blah blah blah. but do you really believe it? i have heard waaayyy too many stories of people who are more qualified than others who didn't get it. it makes no sense and there is no point in calculating the points and trying to go into detail of what was possibly wrong with the more qualified person that didn't get them in. the fact is that each uc is looking for a specific group of ppl. there is no way to change it. these admission ppl are lousy. just accept it. try to appeal...that's all.

this wasn't me, it's just a crappy situation that two of my friends were in:

It was the dream school of the more qualified girl, and the guy only applied because she came back and talked about how much she loved it and also because i think he had a bit of a crush on her.

neither of them interviewed or anything, although the girl visited the campus. I helped both of them with their apps (being the only one where i live who has a grasp on the concept of college admissions) and neither had anything spectacular or detrimental.

the girl also isn't the type of girl who would get a bad teacher rec.

is there grounds to appeal??? i know it would be hard for an Out of stater, but I consoled her by telling her that UCSC probably didn't know that they were on the top of the list. Any ideas???

Successfully appealing an admissions decision is almost impossible without an extenuating circumstance such a misgraded SAT or your high school sending the wrong transcript.

Most UC's have an several readers that do all the OOS apps. Obviously, the reader(s) saw something in the guy's portfolio that didn't come across in the girl's (essays, perhaps).

do UC's waitlist?

Why would out-of-state applicants apply to UCSC?

^ Ask why the first was rejected and the second accepted. Same answer. =)

It's hard to see why one would get in, and why the other wouldn't. The UCs go by a point system. Perhaps the higher SAT from your friend on the bottom was enough to edge your friend on the top.

What about money? If the bottom one could pay that might have been a factor. Also doesn't take into account things like an essay or another personal circumstances. Like any hard family situations or anything like that for the bottom one?

d.wang:

sorry, but slightly incorrect. Berkeley and UCLA do NOT go by a point system, altho San Diego and Davis do.

BlueBayou

I didn't know Davis went by a point system. Is it published somewhere?
