UC admission anamoly

Two of my friends applied, both from out of state.

One of them
4/50 in the class (top 10%)
like 1200 SAT
loads of EC's
fluent in norwegian and english (spent sophomore year in norway)
probably nice recs
OUT OF STATE

rejected

while the other
1330 SAT
29/50 in the class (not in top 50%)
literally does nothing
OUT OF STATE
accepted

this just can go to show how random the admission process is.

Edit: You guys are reading it wrong, the top one was rejected and the bottom one accepted.

what are their GPAs?

They were nothing stellar. They were out of state.

Therefore, it's no surprise that they were rejected.

I doubt colleges care as much about ECs as they claim to.

Besides...their SATs were too low for out-of-state...

Oh wait...the OTHER one was accepted.

At what UC?

no no you are reading it wrong

the bottom one got in

the top did not

santa cruz i think

still found it surprising that they would take someone from out of state who was in the bottom half of his class (or at least not take the other)

Because the one on the bottom had half-decent SATs and the one on the top didn't have stellar SATs.

neither of them had stellar SATs

i just assumed being in top 10% versus bottom half and loads of EC's would trump 130 points on the SAT

one gpa = 93.3
two gpa = 77.8

these are two of my best friends; neither of them had great essays it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

The one who got in must have been some sort of minority.

UCs don't consider minority status. And this isn't terribly surprising althought UCSC admits the vast majority of applicants anyway.

Did they apply to different UCs?

Almost EVERY school considers minority status. Give me solid proof that the UCs don't use affirmative action.

California Proposition 209 banned afimitive action.

The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of ... public education

For the purposes of this section, ''state" shall include, but not necessarily be limited to ... any public university system, including the University of California, community college district, school district.

Is this definitve enough proof?

And Bill beat me to it.

Ok then. I suppose the guy got in by pure luck.

UC's do NOT consider class rank as an admissions criteria. Morever, being in the top half of a competitive, small private school can be a lot more impressive than being in the top half of a large public.

Did they both apply to UCSC?

the top was a girl, the bottom was a guy, if that makes any difference

they are both white, i don't know why the bottom got in over the top, that's all.

does UCSC care about yield??? that's the only thing i can think of; also they are out of state.

both from a non-competitive (but small) public
