Everything I read on this site talks about taking the hardest classes possible, but on the UC website it doesn't mention anything regarding course rigor as an admissions factor. Basically, I was just wondering if rigor has anything to do with admissions to the UC's, or if harder classes are just recommended for the extra grade point.

The UCs use “Comprehensive Review.” Each campus chooses how to weight each factor. If you look at numbers 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 10, each of those have to do with course rigor:

Well, I’m screwed, thanks very much though.

Sorry! Hmmm… were AP and honors offered at your high school? If not, they take that into consideration. Did you start off with a regular college prep course load and add AP or honors in Junior+Senior year? Did you have an outside job that made challenging courses too challenging? All of that is taken into consideration and can be addressed in your personal statements or “extra information.”

Also remember that if you meet all eligibility requirements, you will be admitted to a UC - and though AP and honors are recommended, they are not required.

Best of luck!

Well, Basically every AP/Honors course is offered at my school, and by the end of senior year I’ll only have done 2 honors courses, Japanese 5/Pre calc, and 2 AP courses, AP Japanese/AP Calc AB.

I’m guessing your counselor didn’t mention that course rigor is a factor in UC admissions. At my son’s high school, the counselor makes it very clear that kids need to be on track with their a-g courses, but not once in 4 years did she mention that most UCs give extra points for students who take more than 35 a-g credits. I found this out by doing my own research.

With how competitive UC admissions are, kids really need to keep their eye on the criteria starting at the end of freshman year.

If you have a strong GPA and test scores, there is no reason to think you are “screwed!” The “top three” UCs would be reaches, but the middle group would be reasonable targets. Start working on your essays and best presentations for your ECs now. There is space to write a line or two for each activity - make sure every word counts.

There are also 23 CSU campuses - be sure to put some on your list as safeties - and literally hundreds of privates in California [CaliforniaColleges.edu - Home](http://www.californiacolleges.edu/) You are NOT “screwed!”
