I've been searching all over the web to find statistics on UC Berkeley's admissions statistics for the GPA of Psychology transfer students admitted to their undergraduate program and haven't had any luck.

GOOD NEWS TO YOU ALL…

I just spoke with an admissions officer at Cal regarding the average GPA admitted this semester, so far, for transfers…First of all, she clearly expressed that the GPA is not the only important criteria and that ALL aspects of the application are taken into consideration; however, to our content, the average GPA thus far has been a 3.6!!!

And, I was sure to ask her that it was for the MAJOR and not just L&S!

EXCELLENT NEWS – I hope she understood my question correctly and that 3.6 GPA is true because if so, it looks like we all have a pretty excellent shot!

hell yaaaa!!! trying so hard not to count my chickens before they hatch at this point!!

UC Transferrable GPA: My CCC GPA is 4.0, but I’m not sure coz I have studied one year in an oversea 4-year university with 3.2 GPA… according to UC Davis it is 3.75
Lower-Div. Major Prep GPA (Psyc major only): 4.0
Completed Lower Div. Major Prep? No, 2 in progress (Bio, Socio)
Completed IGETC? No, 2 in progress (Critical thinking, Chem)
Number of years spent at CC: 2 years at DVC
TAP, EOPS, etc.: No
Extra Curricular: Some volunteer work 40+ hours total
Major Oriented Extra Curricular: No
Work Experience: Worked in my home country
Personal Statement : 6-7/10? I’m not the greatest writer, wrote it couple days before deadline, went through a couple drafts though.

@JeffJenks Are you serious??? Wow, I really want to believe that this is true, but it sounds almost to good to be true!

If last year’s admitted transfer class had an average GPA of 3.77 (according to [Student Profile | UC Berkeley Office of Undergraduate Admissions](Student Profile - Office of Undergraduate Admissions)), it seems odd that an impacted major (which is, by definition, is more competitive) would have a dramatically lower average GPA. For example, at UCLA, the overall average was somewhere in the 3.7 range for transfers last year, but the Psychology average was 3.83.

Anyhow, I really hope the person you spoke to is correct! But I also don’t want to get my hopes up…

Oh and here are my stats. Thanks for making this great thread.

UC Transferrable GPA: 3.81
Completed Lower Div. Major Prep? Y (finishing some now, but will be done with all prereqs this semester
Completed IGETC? Y
Number of years spent at CC: 3
TAP, EOPS, etc.: TAP Berkeley
Extra Curricular: CC clubs, some volunteering
Work Experience: Many years of full-time work experience
Personal Statement (Self Score; + x/10) : Jeez I don’t know…8? I spent a lot of time on it and thought it was great at the time but I hate it when I read it now :-P

@boyzalan, your application sounds strong given your very high GPA. But note that Cal employs a holistic approach to their admissions process and therefore GPA is not everything, though it’s still crucial. Hopefully you’ve written something about transitioning from your home country to the U.S. in you app?

@CQBanana, that’s a really good point. It does seem very bizarre that such an impacted major would have such a low avg. GPA.

I really hope it’s true too!
And thank’s for posting your stats.

Well, even if turns out to be that it’s not technically, statistically true that the average is really 3.6, I think the fact that an admissions rep told you this is still a good thing.

At the very least, it represents her sense of the applicant pool, and that’s valuable, because she has a lot more information than we do! And if her sense is even remotely accurate, then it means that they are admitting students with 3.6 GPAs (and probably lower, too) into the program. And that is of course good news.

And hey, for all I know, the average GPA could go down this year. You never know.

I like your optimism, CQ.
We can only hope the GPA has gone down this year, for our sake!

Just curious, how did this conversation happen? Did you just call and ask?

Yeah, called their admissions office. The conversation I had with the admissions officer that gave me all of this information was the first time I called. I called again because I became skeptical of the info. (How could it be that UCB, the best public school in the nation for Psychology, is accepting transfer students w an avg. 3.6 GPA and UCLA is @ 3.83?). So, I called again and that time I spoke with a guy (he sounded much younger, I doubt he was an admissions officer - probably just an office assistant or receptionist) and he said that they do not release information like that…
So I dont know what to make of it. I trust the lady though, she sounded very genuine; although, she may not have understood mee? Even though I asked the question to her two times during our phone call…

Interesting, thanks for sharing. Oh well only a few more days!

I thought my 4.0 GPA was the only thing that could save me, but now knowing my GPA could take a big hit because of my previous coursework… I’m so nervous right now!!! 2 more days!!!

UC Transferrable GPA: 4.0
Lower-Div. Major Prep GPA (Psyc major only): 4.0
Completed Lower Div. Major Prep? Y/N No…a lot are not translated
Completed IGETC? Y/N yes by this semester

Extra Curricular: couple clubs, lot of church volunteering
Major Oriented Extra Curricular: not really
Work Experience: 25 hours a week
Personal Statement (Self Score; + x/10) : 7?

@bananabanana123 what major prep did you not complete?

Hey guys did any other psych majors get the email asking for financial aid info? I’m a psych major too by the way

@KatDawg1 I did not get any email today. What info was it asking for, specifically?
