UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

I was in Wheeler Hall. It didn’t seem new or incredibly nice lol. I wouldn’t have minded a planner though!

I did see the new ASUC building, it was beautiful. It came a long way since I last saw it.

@briank82 is that the bullet coffee?

@lindyk8 I made bulletproof coffee at home a couple of days ago and I had the best day at school ever. Wasn’t tired at all. I recommend it.

Yeah, I read about it a year ago @boxandwhiskers and wanted to try it. But it seemed too labor intensive for me. ~O)

I may need to reassess.

May I ask where you heard about the application workshop? And was it a one time thing, or will there be more of them? And I am going to have to try some of these coffee drinks!

@GoldenWest http://transfers.berkeley.edu/

They’re located in the Cesar Chavez center on campus - they offer counseling with admissions officers on Thursdays and Fridays from 2-4, and personal statement help up until the end of October. They’re located on campus. I’m sure there’s an email or phone number that you can find somewhere on that website.

They’re REALLY helpful.

(tangential line)

I was reading about bulletproof coffee, but then I read something about it being terribly unhealthy; the innovator of the stuff claimed to be extremely fit, but he ended up getting diabetes (not necessarily a result of his putting butter in his coffee every morning, but it is likely that drinking bulletproof coffee regularly had an impact).

I’m wary of bulletproof. My black blood of the earth, well, that’s another beast entirely; the caffeine content in it is ridiculously high, it’s definitely something to take very lightly (I’m saying that it should be consumed in terms of drops, significantly under 50 mL).

@goldencub, did he really get diabetes? Wow. Yeah, I remember, he was this guru promoting the health benefits. Definitely butter is now seen as a bit more healthy than first thought, but he was really piling it on. (Diabetes, no matter how well you manage it, is always a downward road at some point. I wonder if he still drinks it.)

@lindyk8 It seemed that he was fairly slim, but consistently drinking coffee with butter in it can’t be the best lifestyle choice. I don’t know the specifics, but I’m fairly sure he got diabetes despite being slim.

Still, it’s definitely something that I’d want to try at some point in my life. :(|) ~O)

Thank you @goldencub!

Yeah I definitely don’t recommend drinking it every day all the time. That’s kind of crazy. I did it because I ran out of half and half at 5 am. Definitely worth trying. @goldencub where did you get this black blood of the earth?

@lindyk8 Yes, it was Bulletproof Coffee. Nothing from their “brand,” but the same concept. Their coffee and MCT oil is overpriced. I just buy whatever coffee is on sale at Whole Foods, use grass fed butter, a tablespoon of MCT oil from Whole Foods, and I add a scoop of chocolate protein powder. I drink it in the morning after the gym.

I agree with what @boxandwhiskers said. I started drinking it last spring where I had a 7:30am stats class followed by pre-calc 30 minutes later. It would keep me alert, but not jittery (the fat is supposed to slow absorption), and even though I didn’t eat breakfast I wouldn’t be hungry even around noon. It’s easy to make, especially if you use a pot of coffee for two days. If the coffee isn’t already hot, I just heat a cup for 80 seconds, throw it in my Vitamix (FTW), add the butter, oil, and protein … blend for 20 seconds, pour into my glass, and rinse the blender out with hot water. Boom!

Don’t worry about the branded/trademarked “Bulletproof Coffee” stuff. It’s overpriced and you’re paying for the name. And, also, I don’t drink it religiously. I sometimes make the same coffee in the morning (oil, protein … maybe add flax for a little fiber) sans the butter. But, as you said, butter doesn’t have as bad of a rap as it once did, but you still don’t want to overdo it. It’s also just one tablespoon and besides this I rarely eat butter. I love butter, I just don’t use it much in cooking, I stick mainly to EVOO and grape seed oil.

@GoldenWest The specific one I went to was for TAP students and was a requirement to attend. While these ones are done, goldencub’s advice sounds good. Either way, attending one of these is incredibly helpful. Why try and guess EXACTLY what they want and how they want it, when you can get advice directly from people who know, and in some cases people who actually evaluate applications?

Hey guys,

Just joining the discussion here, looking forward to keeping in touch throughout the application process.

Major: EECS
GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
Major Prereqs: Complete (could not complete CS61A or C because they’re not offered in Los Angeles).
EC’s:
NASA Internship
CS Teaching Assistant
VEX Robotics Team

@BryceUCTransfer nice EC’s and GPA. You are extremely competitive.

Hey guys,

Not seeing a lot of transfers into similar majors but it’s cool we have this thread!

Major: Peace & Conflict Studies(Considering doubling with Middle Eastern Studies)
GPA: 3.9 Overall, 4.0 in ASSIST certified courses
EC’s:Model Arab League, starting a club for it, work at a non-profit teen club, rock climbing/fitness work, Intern for county water agency over summer, etc…
IGETC: certified after spring semester
Also in TAP, prereqs are completed, not a big problem for this major but I’ve taken as many connected/desired classes as I can too

@tada77 It’s funny, the only people I know (in real life) that have transferred into Berkeley are Peace and Conflict Studies major. Your GPA and EC’s are good, you seem fine to me.

Haha thanks…the crazy thing is I can’t find a single person who is planning on that major-no one I’ve met in TAP, nobody at all. I’m in love with the subject though, can’t wait!

@tada77 If your prereq’s will be completed, then I think you’ll have a solid chance. I don’t think PACS is impacted or anything.

Please Chance me and give me more information regarding the rhetoric and middle eastern studies major

Major: Currently History but will change to Rhetoric or Middle Eastern Studies, whichever is less competitive.
GPA: 3.7
Major GPA: 4.0 for history
EC: President of chess club, History 7 honors, member of Muslim student association, Psych club, Alpha Gamma Sigma honors society,
Volunteer: 200 in a hospital, 200 at local mosques, 50 at democratic headquarters, volunteered at the Afghanistan Embassy under the Ambassador of Afghanistan in Spain
Hooks: First generation college student, poor, minority (Afghan), been working since I was 14, a very rough life with experiences of racism, homelessness, poverty, death in family, moving often, identity crisis, etc

Bad: I got a B in religious studies nature of islam, ENG 1A and Eng 4. I got a W in math 55, and a NP in math 55. I got a P in 65, and currently working towards a P in 55. Will take math for liberal arts majors when I am done.

Good: I can write a a very good personal statement. My great grandparents and grandparents were servants in Afghanistan and my parents are illiterate. I am the only one to ever attend High School. Would writing that I am only interested in CAL help? My parents are in poor health and I can’t move out, I need to be there for them. I live close enough to UCB to live at home and commute. I also play a lot of basketball but I got injured during try outs for my local jc. Had I made it, I would have been the shortest Afghan American to every play college basketball. Would this be good to mention or is it irrelevant because I did not make the team? I also intend on going to law school at Cal, does this make me look better?

Please chance me for middle eastern studies and rhetoric.
Also, what classes are recommended for Rhetoric and MES? Should I take as many English classes as possible to get into Rhetoric? Should I take an Eastern histo

@pleaseberkeley Er, you should major in what you want to. You could probably get in as a History major - I think definitely for Rhetoric, MES depends (check the articulation agreement with your school, MES seems to have many foreign lang requirements and courses that are not generally offered at CC). Rhetoric transfers usually take Rhetoric 10/20 after they transfer, which is fine. You’re definitely competitive for History/Rhetoric, although probably more so for the latter - so if you’re absolutely sure that you don’t want to major in History, I recommend going for Rhetoric. Berkeley’s holistic admissions will benefit you either way. Rhetoric is probably good, considering you want to go to law school.

Talk about why you want to be close to home in your PS. Don’t talk about the basketball team thing, as it’s irrelevant. I wouldn’t mention wanting to go to law school at Cal, either, but that’s nothing major.

Try a logic/critical thinking class for rhetoric. Philosophy classes are comparable, I think. More difficult English classes would likely help, too.

P/NP’s look bad for law schools. It makes sense to shoot for a P in Math 55 (whatever that is), but try not to P/NP many more classes.

There is a transfer center on campus that can help you write your personal statement. You can meet with an admissions officer there from 2-4, Thursdays and Fridays. It’s a resource that would probably benefit you.
