UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@lindyk8 Good idea. I’m going to SRJC on Monday morning to take care of it and am submitting TAG closer to the deadline. I know the UC TAP website just says to list other names that may be on records so I put my maiden name.

From Berkeley’s website (http://guide.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/colleges-schools/letters-science/#breadthrequirementstext):

“Note: IGETC certification from a California community college or a letter of reciprocity from a UC campus satisfies the Seven Course Breadth requirement (and all other L&S breadth requirements).*”

@jonuni94 according to this page, you need IGETC.
http://www2.assist.org/exploring-majors/findMajorDescription.do?abbrev=UCB&majorId=111&type=UC

The only variable regarding this page is when a some majors allow either breadth or IGETC, I have noticed this page defaults to IGETC (in other words, doesn’t indicate the other option).

I believe econ allows either IGETC or breadth, but be sure to check. (And yes, one replaces the other. They are just different forms of general ed courses.)

Keep in mind, Berkeley L&S does not allow AP to fulfill breadth, while it does allow AP for IGETC. If you have a lot of AP, even though IGETC has more courses, you may come out needing less.

@jonuni94 here it notes two options, but being as there aren’t that many requirements, my assumption (which might be wrong) is to complete IGETC to be more competitive.

@lindyk8 Awesome. I already have IGETC finished and for Econ on Assist.org it also gives me the OR option coming from my CCC.

I’ve seen you around the forums and appreciate the help for all of us!

Jon

Good luck @jonuni94, you seem to have it all under control!

Vey happy to know that we will be able to change our majors at Cal once we transfer. I’m a psychology major, but I’ve been focused on getting all of the prereqs done for UCLA’s psych since it is the most impacted UC for this major. As a result, I didn’t get 2 of the classes done for Berkeley’s psych. Hopefully I’ll be able to take those last two classes either this spring or summer so I can declare myself as a Psychology major if I end up at Cal!

@themightybicycle, here are the psych rules:

@lindyk8 I’ll definitely keep you updated on this thread and read up on what everyone else has got to say! So thankful for forum boards like this one!!

Hi, I just found this useful source http://admissions.berkeley.edu/transfer_info for OOS transfers to evaluate their reading and composition courses.
However, almost all of those courses are evaluated as “ESKILLS 01+ READING AND COMPOSITION - ONE HALF”. Just curious whether the “ONE HALF” indicates satisfying one course over two, or half over two? It would be really crazy to require four reading and composition courses…
Any ideas?

Adding to the collection of stats.
Intended Major- Conservation Resource Studies
IGETC- Finished by matriculation
Major pre reqs- Finished by matriculation
Units by fall 2016- 73 (four semesters)
GPA- 4.0
EC’s- (super weak) schools honors society and chemistry club

Any one else applying to college of natural resources??

@mayitbe thx so much for that link! I had run into it months ago and then could never find it again.

Posted two threads of this however I got very few responses. With my number one pick being UC Berkeley, I thought I would give a try here.

All tips are appreciated + Chance me

Name: Saagar Sharma (Pacific Islander born and raised in the United States)

Currently attending my sophomore year at San Francisco State with an intent of transferring out. This school didn’t seem like the right fit for me. My high school stats were poor and given my circumstances at the time, it seemed most convenient for me to go to a four year university. I am fully aware that it is harder to transfer from a four year university, however attending a community college is not an option.

I am currently a business finance major but I plan on transferring as a rhetoric major.
Current Stats: 3.88 GPA with a competitive schedule (DARN THOSE A-'s)

Extra Curricular Activities:
Intern at a top tier bank - (Won’t disclose out of discretion, but think Bank of America, J.P Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo etc.) I handle a lot of paperwork and transactions for private bank clients.

Community service abroad- Participated in a program where I did administrative work (mostly accounting/excel spreadsheets) for a medium sized hospital in India.

Help out in my parents corporation: We are multi-unit franchise owners and I help with operations on my spare time.

Participate in clubs at school but I don’t hold any positions: Indian Student Association and an economics/finance club.

Appreciate all advice, thanks in advance

For any other philosophy majors out there: I spent this Wednesday evening on assist to see if any CCCs offer our prereq’s for Berkeley. Turns out, there are some that offer them all: Cabrillo College and CCSF (perhaps more, but I stopped at CCSF).

I was going to take PHILOS 25A via cross-enrollment at Cal, but it is unlikely that I would have been able to get off the wait list (there are still 16 people on it, and the deadline is a week from now - due to additional deadlines that I need not explain, it wouldn’t have worked out).

Anywho, I will be finishing my prerequisites, so for any other Phil majors out there, there are schools that offer our classes. This is a much better option than having to take 12 classes for our major after we transfer.

Also, in some completely unrelated news, tomorrow I will be purchasing coffee that is 40x as strong as regular coffee. It’s cold brewed, and one is supposed to sip it through a shot glass. Thought I would share.

lol. Have fun with that! Cold brew coffee is often concentrate and meant to be diluted with water and/or milk. Enjoy the buzz!

@briank82 Oh, I know - I’m a huge fan of cold brew coffee, but I have been eyeing this stuff for quite some time now. The creator of this stuff actually works on UCB’s campus. I need not go into more detail, but yes, it’s incredibly concentrated coffee, but it is regularly consumed as just concentrate. It’s supposedly not bitter at all, is rather sweet, and lacks the chemical that gives one the jitters.

Cold brew, in general, is really interesting. It’s done for teas and other drinks as well and one major benefit of it is that it leaves behind a lot of the tannic elements and acidity one might normally find.

For some teas, some use a giant reservoir filled with ice and a basket of the tea underneath. At the ice very slowly melts, it just adds one cold drip at a time to the tea. Several hours later, you have cold brewed tea.

Pretty neat.

40x as strong. Beats me why anyone would even want that sort of concentration.

Drink responsibly!

People like what they like, @lindyk8 … hell, I put MCT oil and grass fed butter in my coffee :stuck_out_tongue:

On a more relevant topic, I was at UCB for an application workshop last night. Ended up wandering through club rush or something of the sort. It was nuts, and a little intimidation.

@lindyk8 It’s called the “Black Blood of the Earth” ~O) - it’s brewed with Death Wish coffee, beans that are supposedly 2x as caffeinated as regular coffee beans. It does seem that 40x is an accurate measure of how caffeinated it is.

@briank82 I generally use a Japanese pour over method for my iced coffee, for the sake of convenience (as I have a cone filter and not a french press, which makes brewing coffee with cold water less than ideal).

I’ve heard that cold brewing tea is interesting, but I have yet to try it. I have an affinity for poorly made, strong, and exceedingly bitter black tea (iced). I’m definitely a fan of other teas, but English Breakfast is cheap, convenient, pleasing to my taste buds, and gets the job done.

Edit: @briank82 Yes, I was at Calapalooza as well! I got a free planner.
Have you seen the new ASUC building on Telegraph and Bancroft? It’s incredibly nice.
