@lindyk8 Unfortunately, psych majors require two courses to satisfy the quantitative area. Even if I have one done, I’ll have to take the other either at UCB should I be accepted or over the summer. I was just wondering if taking it over the summer would be acceptable.
Ah, I was talking IGETC minimum/general UC math requirement. In terms of the major requirements for psych, they have extended through summer for calc.
Sorry if there was a misunderstanding. Earlier we were talking the uc math quantitative requirement, which is what I was referring to.
Tough break about that new psych req.
@lindyk8 Haha. That’s okay. I don’t think I was clear in my post.
Seems you’ve already done the math for core requirement ( 2 english composition and 1 quantitative reasoning).
Assist for psych major says it is okay to finish your pre-req in summer. So you’ll have no problem.
When you update your Fall grades on the berkeley application website, you’ll get a space to discuss additional information. So if you’re concern, tell them that the course is only offered in summer on there.
Leaving the core requirement undone can be a problem.
I know one girl who had 4.0 GPA with perfect EC, all pre-req and GE done by spring but still got rejected by UCLA com major. The only reasoning I can come up with is she did not take any math class by Fall. I also know one of my friends who got emails from a UC campus inquiring about the math grade in winter quarter.
What are my chances?
Intended Major - Computer Science L&S
Overall GPA - 3.89
Major GPA - 4.00
Units completed so far - 59
IGETC(Including foreign language req) will be finished by end of Spring 2016
I am currently taking 21 units and will take 21 units in the spring.
EC’s: Coder’s Club, Engineering Club
I have racked up 8 W’s during college. This fall semester is the start of my 4th year. My first two years of CC I was not focused and I even dropped out for 3 full semester.
But I have made up 6 of the W’s with A’s, the other 2W’s I will not make up because one is a Bio course and the other is a intro to Physics course.
I will not be needing Bio for my major and since taking the intro Physics course, I have gotten A’s in the more advanced Physics classes.
What are my chances? How will the W’s affect my application?
Anyone know how detrimental it would be to take a W in a major prereq this Fall to retake it in the Spring?
@eXit369 The UC’s do not care about W’s.
You have a 3.89 - when did you get Bs? Were they a while ago, or recently? (partially out of curiosity - it can help me better gauge your academic record, and the UCs like upward trends)
I think you are competitive.
@goldencub Hey, yeah I really hope that they don’t wont too much about my W’s.
I have 2 B’s. I got a B in the first semester of my CC, summer 2012, it was a Conceptual Physics course. The other B, was in Macroeconomics course, Spring 2013, I did well on the exams but literally did not do any homework for Econ haha. I was honestly a really lazy student and unmotivated. Spring 2014, I dropped all my courses and received 5 W’s. Though ever since then starting with Summer 2014, I have gotten 4.00’s.
I feel like my GPA will drop a bit this semester because I am taking 21 units, though I am taking 2 courses for P/NP. I just have a bad feeling about my current Physics course. But I’ll try my best.
Currently taking
-Linear Algebra & Differential Equations
-Physics: Waves, Optics, Thermodynamics (along with a Lab)
-Programming Fundamentals of C++
-History, Western Civilization
-Music of Latin America/Caribbean (P/NP)
-American Sign Language (P/NP) (for my foreign language req, IGETC, will take another semester of sign language in spring)
I don’t think UC’s accept classes graded via P/NP, but I could be wrong with the rules on that, but I thought I remember being told that when applying to UC’s, your UC transferrable classes need to be graded with a letter grade.
@boxandwhiskers Major prep HAS to be a letter grade. I think IGETC does too, but that can vary by CC.
The UCs do accept P/NP classes, especially if you have space in your schedule and need the 60 units.
@luckie1367 Ah okay, I stand corrected. That’s good to know.
@eXit369 Try your best. They only consider your GPA as it stands by the end of the Fall. If you could get straight A’s, then I think you’ll be golden.
I thought we weren’t allowed to P/NP classes for IGETC? Check with your counselor.
Actually, both breadth and IGETC can be P/NP, as long as you don’t go over 14 semester limit.

@lindyk8 youre right, Ive been encouraged to take 1 or 2 non major classes for p/np by both TAP counselors and Haas staff. Haas even allows for foreign language to be pass no pass so that we can focus on the things we actually want to learn
@MikeSauce, yeah, I’ve seen that about Haas and foreign language. They really make it prominent that you can do all of it P/NP. Interesting… And yeah, my daughter did one IGETC science and a lower level Spanish P/NP.
Is there anyone apply as OOS?
@ lindyk8 Yep, the schools allow a maximum of 14 units to be Pass/No Pass, as long as the classes are not major requirement courses.
So I am taking American Sign Language 1 and 2, they are 3 units each. So 6.
I am also taking Music of Latin America/Carribean and Psychology for P/NP.
So 12 units in total.
Then I will be finished with GE’s, and obtain an AA in Mathematics.
Hopefully UC Berkeley or Cal Poly accepts me for Computer Science…
Why are you guys doing P/NP? Just take it for the actual grade. I thought 24 units was going to be hard for the semester, but CC is a complete joke. I think it looks good if you take 20+ credits/semester and get a 4.0
Or you could get a 4.0 without getting what would normally be considered an A in a class by taking it P/NP. Seems pretty straightforward. 4.0 > 3.8 (or whatever, by possibly getting a B in a class instead of a P)
If the class is completed (and it’s allowed to be taken P/NP), I highly doubt the school cares one way or the other.
“CC is a complete joke”
I believe graduate schools care if classes are taken P/NP (they essentially look at a P as a C) - but I’m sure that a few P’s wouldn’t be terribly detrimental to one’s chances. I don’t think it’s too big of a deal, especially if they aren’t major classes.
