UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@goldencub. Agreed. Also, graduate schools put more weight on last two years of undergrad and less weight on first two years.

If you do stellar work at a UC I doubt many graduate schools will flip out because of a couple of non/major-related Ps at a CCC.

LOL at people who think “it’s a joke to go to a CC” and then transfer to a UC like LA or Berkeley. Sure, it’s not as impacted as high school admissions may be, but you still have to WORK for it and keep completely focused.

People CAN choose classes that are deemed easy A’s, put in very little work, and transfer to a reputable 4-year. But then, they will be getting very little out of CC (certainly not taking all that it has to offer), and will likely face the consequences after transferring. What one gets from CC is what one puts into it - period.

@lindyk8 Yes! I’m talking about Introduction to Statistics (:
I’m actually taking a remedial course (Intermediate Algebra) right now, but it’s an 8 week class, so I’ll be finished before we even submit our applications this November (I finish mid-October). I’m waitlisted for this online 8-week Intro to Stats class for this fall also (it goes from October to December), but there’s just way too many people who are in the same situation as me and are also trying to get into this Statistics class, so I’m not sure if I’ll have stats completed by the end of this fall…If anything, do you think taking it over winter might help? I was planning on taking a math class in Spring regardless, but I just wasn’t sure if I should have taken it this fall instead ):

@briank82 Yeah, as you can tell, math is my weakest subject. I’m taking a remedial course (Interm. Alg) and I was hoping that being a political science/history major may boost my chances since it doesn’t require anything math-intensive such as calc. Although, I do understand that UC’s definitely want to see a UC transferrable class completed with a grade in the Fall prior to transferring. I was planning on taking a transferrable math course next semester in Spring…but I feel like this would hinder my chances considering that they don’t know how well I’ll do in a UC transferrable class since applications would have already been submitted…

@by3000 My daughter did stats in spring, and she had only int Algebra with a letter grade. She got into all the UCs she applied to, including Berkeley, UCLA and UCSB. I think you’re fine even if you take in spring. The key is you have a completed math class with a letter grade (that’s what UCSB wants to see, anyway).

@lindyk8 Oh wow, that’s such a relief to hear. A big congrats to your daughter, that’s amazing to get accepted to all those schools! If you don’t mind asking me, what was her major? (:

Communications at UCLA, Media Studies at Berkeley.

Honestly transferring is not going to be as hard as actually getting a degree. My Berkeley EECS friends told me its really hard. So if you can’t survive 20+ units with a 4.0… not even worth lol. CC is a complete joke compared to programs like EECS, haas, chemical eng, etc… I took my linear algebra midterm and straight up pulled a 100%… That’s so sad since I’m not even that smart. I took the Princeton, MIT, and Berkeley practice exams for Linear and got like a C- average. I guarantee you there are people in my classes that would get 0%'s on actual 4 year university exams.

Thank you for telling us a complete joke

I didn’t know Martin Shkreli was an EECS hopeful. =))

In other news I found this gender breakdown by major spreadsheet to be super interesting. I didn’t realize Integrative Biology and Public Health are that uneven.

Edit: CC really doesn’t like Google links. :frowning:

@SDGoldenBear That’s very interesting. Surprised at Comparative Literature, Classics, NutriSci, etc. Haas has a very even distribution.

Unsurprisingly, Philosophy is predominantly male.
Only 190 phil majors in the school. Good to know.

8,938 Undeclared students in L&S @-)

It is REALLY interesting how most majors that are predominantly male are hardcore STEM majors, and most majors that are predominantly female are more arts/humanities/social science oriented.

holy crap EECS… 6 guys/girl ratio… Girls be lucky in that. Talk about choice and competition.

looking back, that capitalized really seems a little too emphasized

You left out all the frat boys in business.

Wow, Sociology has 357 women to 138 males. No wonder I feel so at home.

@lindyk8 That’s awesome! Did she get an A in her remedial math course also? (:

@by3000 If you don’t get into your into to stats class, you can take it online from a different community college in the state. That’s what I’m doing with my trig class. I only found one school that’s doing trig, but a million that have stats. That’s an option you can try if you would like.

@aepaige Thanks for your suggestion! I’ve actually already applied and searched for at least six different community colleges, none that offer a 8 week course for this fall online that I need ):
So no luck there, but I’ll keep trying.

@by3000 look at lake tahoe community college. It’s offered online, and just started this week. It ends December 12th.
