@bryannadee you have a lot of things going for you but I would recommend trying to knock out at least one of those two requirements you’re missing because that would strengthen your chance of getting in significantly.
Help please!
So I am applying to all UCs this month including Berkeley, obviously (I’m on this thread). I know my GPA and extracurriculars are not great but I am holding onto hope that I could somehow get in. I know my boyfriend got into Berkeley with a 3.5 GPA and had econ as his intended major.
Here are my stats:
Major: Media Studies
GPA: 3.5
Extracurriculars: Member of 2 honor societies (Gamma Beta Phi & Phi Theta Kappa), Member of Student Success Club & Communications Club, Over 200 hours of community service with Key Club International, position in Associated Student Government as Officer of Marketing and Information and I am currently interning as a Digital Marketing Specialist for an advertising agency. I also have 2 jobs working (28.5 hours a week)
Pre reqs: All completed last semester
*Also if there is anyone willing to read and offer suggestions/opinions on my personal statement, I would greatly appreciate it! I currently have 3 Berkeley graduates helping me with my paper as well. The more help, the better
Good luck to everyone else!
Hey guys, what is your knowledge on including extracurriculars from High school? I graduated in 2014.
@blsucstudent. It’s fine to add junior/senior. Obviously focus on your most current and most impactful, however.
Does anyone know the usual course load for a Philosophy major at Cal?
the average amount of reading/essays a week?
@HughMirin It’s not too bad, as far as I’m aware. Readings are dense, naturally. Philos 100 - Methods has one hell of a workload, and some classes are particularly hard. Average admitted GPA is ~3.6, to my knowledge. Most applicants don’t have the prerequisites completed.
This may lift everyone’s spirit.

Does uc berkeley take fall update into the admission decision or dp they look at applications eithout the fall update
@Pinkponylife with the fall update
@Pinkponylife I’m almost certain they aren’t even looked at until the January update is received.
I am a prospective applicant who wants to transfer from UCSD To UCB (Chemistry B.A. , College of Letters and Science ) However, I found very difficult to find the required courses that I need to complete prior to transfer. Does anyone know where I can find this information? Thanks in advance!
@omex666 Go to assist.org, plug in any community college, then choose Berkeley and Chem. Try and match those Cal requirements with the courses offered at UCSD. Also, get a Letter of Reciprocity signed off by UCSD, meaning you have fulfilled all the general ed courses required for UCSD. Your UCSD advisor will know about it. You will need that completed to get to Berkeley. Lastly, don’t go over the transfer unit max for Berkeley, which can be found here:
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/uc-transfer-maximum-limitation-policy-chart.pdf
Berkeley’s are 135 quarter units, but I would try and aim for a bit less.
BTW, 666 is not a positive energy number.
Hey guys,
In the additional comments section after the personal statements, what should/can we put in their?
Would it help my chances if I wrote a brief essay about overcoming a hardship in that space?
@csmajortom everything I’ve ever heard is explaining bad grades and W’s. Where I’m stuck is my W’s are extremely random and there’s no semester where I decided to drop all my classes because I got sick or something. I have 1 W in the Fall which I retook for an A and one W this fall which I will not retake. Both Ws were because I did not believe I was going to do well in the class and in the semesters when I got the Ws I was only taking 12-13 units. Does anyone have any recommendations for me on what to say? Because I know I need to mention them if I have them.
If you only have two Ws you really don’t have to say anything.
@csmajortom Do not write another essay in the Additional Comments section.
Put whatever additional comments you have that you never had a chance to articulate anywhere else in the application. For example: was there a hardship that may have affected your academic performance? Mention it. Don’t write it as an essay, just concisely mention things that you want them to know that you haven’t yet been able to mention.
Hey, just wondering, how important are fall semester grades prior to transfer? Because I have a C in chemistry and have no chance of bringing it up. My cumulative GPA this semester is 3.0 and I’ve had 3.8+ every other semester. I’m really starting to get worried.
They’re as important as any other semesters’ grades (aside from the spring prior to transfer, where you just need to pass with whatever grade a possible conditional admit says you need).
They’re important either way.
Well that is a downturn. They will factor fall in.
